About

How Barb Got Started

Barb Abrams received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Michigan State University with an emphasis in print making and painting. Over the years she has attended classes and workshops in a variety of mediums.

After receiving her degree, she moved to Australia where she taught art in middle and high schools. The magical/mystical feel of the outback and the Aboriginal Dreamtime has continued to have a strong influence on her art.

Upon returning to America, Barb received a Masters degree from Eastern Michigan University while working as the Arts and Crafts Coordinator and Gallery Director for the University of Michigan-Flint.

Barb has exhibited in Flint Michigan, Yarram Australia, and Columbus Ohio. She has participated in a Friend and Mentor show with the Ohio Art League, has had a one-woman show at The Mystical Doorway in Hilliard, Ohio and was a featured artist with a traveling exhibit of artists with multiple sclerosis for the Ohio chapter of The National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Barb’s art has continually evolved through the years, although it has always had a whimsical bent to it. After print making for many years, Barb began doing pen and ink drawings (with a definite female orientation). Wanting to change again, she chose jewelry as her new medium, and finds great pleasure drawing on wooden beads, much like the fine line work involved in her drawings. The beads then become earrings, bracelets, or necklaces.

Now she has started decorating wooden boxes in the same style as her beads. Each tile is hand drawn and painted, then glued and grouted to boxes.

Barb is an avid bicyclist and puts several thousand miles on her bike each year. She also raises money for several charity rides in Ohio.

Barb and her husband Rick reside in the Columbus, Ohio area and have two grown children.
