My name is Madara Rozentāle and I'm ceramic designer from Riga, Latvia. I have received BA in Ceramics from Art academy of Latvia and I still study in Masters Degree and I have more than 10 years experience with ceramics design.

I'm the creator and owner of porcelain jewelry brand Rozenthal Jewelry. All started while I was still studying at Latvian Art Academy. On Christmas 2015 I sold my very first white porcelain earrings. That fall I was on Erasmus+ programme and travelled to Barcelona where I spent 6 months. I learnt new ceramic design techniques but I was missing working with porcelain. While I was away from home I realised that porcelain jewelry was my calling. I had great inspiration, my head was full of ideas, one of them being use of pigmented porcelain, and so I made many sketches. In March 2016 Rozenthal Jewelry brand was born and I made my first collection. Pieces were made in authors technique - they were beautiful pigmented porcelain earrings. I was thrilled to see how welcoming my brand was taken locally and it still is. My ideas keep on evolving and I can't stop coming up with new items all the time. I get inspired by nature - starting from tree branches and flower petals to cloudy sky and rough cliffs.

Porcelain jewelry is handmade precisely following in footsteps of traditional ceramics craftsmanship. Each jewelry piece is handcrafted with great care and it takes a long time to create them. Firstly raw porcelain clay is formed and cut into individual pieces, then it takes the first firing. Afterwards porcelain pieces are glazed and again are in kiln for firing. Lastly jewels are hand-painted with gold or platinum luster so I can put them in for the last firing. So after 3 separate firings, from which the highest reaches 1260°C (2300°F), porcelain pieces finally are ready. Dangle earring hooks I make myself using 14k gold-filled wire, but 925 Sterling silver studs are pre-made.

Although I do everything myself from creating the product to selling it, taking photos and dealing with bookkeeping, I do get help from my family and friends that are happy to help my small business in every way they can.

Last year my business got supported by grant programme "Atspēriens” (Take-Off) of Riga City Council, in cooperation with Swedbank. That was a huge ground breaker because I finally could have my own studio, kiln and other technique that is needed for ceramics workshop.
My studio Rozenthal Ceramics offers co-working space for other ceramics artists and I also organise workshops for everyone who is interested in this art form.

My business is also supported by ERDF project "Regional business incubators and Creative industries incubator” of Investment and Development Agency of Latvia.

My job and hobby are pretty much inseparable. I guess that is what happens when you do something you love. In that little spare time I have I do love to travel and discover new beautiful places. And yes, I also take care of my cute cat Frida.
