Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

All I do is custom and personalized orders! Because of the nature of the artwork, nothing is "mass produced." It is all done by hand and not using any automated machines. I add wood burnings I have produced here, but these serve just as much as a resume for what I can do and a compass for where my interests lie.

Sizing details

I tend to buy large pieces of lumber and cut pieces so that they are easily maneuverable on my work table. That said, I can combine and join/edge-glue just about any size needed, although this increases initial material cost. A very common size is usually 11" wide x 16" high x 3/4" thick, depending on the original photo or image being sketched and then burned into the wood.

What kind of wood is used and why?

Certain types of wood (pine, oak, other soft and hard woods) can be very difficult to burn on, so for the sake of availability, cost and — most importantly — quality of surface for burning, I almost always purchase poplar in bulk to cut pieces for burning.

Care instructions

Final produces are 3/4" thick and finished with several coats of polyurethane or polycrylic, so these finished pieces are VERY durable and water resistant. I tend to tell people to treat them like a canvas print and hang them that way, but the only thing you have to worry about is some sort of sharp gouge to the wood or dropping it off of the top of a building. I've done both by accident to some of my pieces and they survived. Cleaning is the same as a piece of furniture; Pledge and a paper towel or rag is all you need.

How long does pyrography take?

Short answer: a long time.

Less short answer: a while, but it depends on a few factors.

Long answer: If it's a simple, cartoony illustration. Not long. If it's an ultra up close, photo realistic image of Johnny Cash's face, then it's going to take a long time. And if it's an unusually large size (the finished product, not Johnny's face) then it's going to take an even longer amount of time.
