Artist Marries Biologist and Creates Science-Inspired Art.
I started making art when I was a little kid. I always loved art, and majored in Art Practice at UC Berkeley, from which I graduated in 2010. My husband is a biologist, and back when he was just my boyfriend, he commissioned me to design a biology-themed t-shirt for his department back in 2007. He believed in my art and invested his own money to get the shirts printed. They were a hit, and I ended up designing shirts for his department for several years thereafter.
In college, I took a screen printing class to make fine art prints, where I explored concepts involving the intersection of science and art, specifically the aesthetics of and the patterns in science. I found them beautiful.
After I graduated, I learned how to screen print t-shirts, and I started designing some biology-themed designs that inspired me. My husband was an excellent resource to ensure the scientific integrity of my work, and I just kept making more shirts.
Now, I sell my t-shirts here on Etsy, at science conferences at universities, and at the Bay Area Science Festival, as well as doing private commissions for labs, biotech companies, and other organizations.
Science is beautiful to me, and structural biology is fascinating to me. It amazes me that there is a whole world that we can't see with the naked eye.
I have explored many concepts on the micro level and now I am progressing to include work on the macro level as well, including closeups of tiny organisms and possibly branching out to other fields of science.
I love that my literal marriage has inspired a marriage of art and science in my craft, and I have no shortage of ideas for future projects that exalt the aesthetics of science.
