My Illustrated Timeline of Israel's History
Enfant, j’étais curieux de connaître l’histoire d’Israël. Mon père était un pasteur qui aimait les cartes et les chronologies, et une carte particulière sur son mur d’étude montrait les rois et les prophètes du royaume du sud de Juda et du royaume du nord d’Israël.
Je me souviens d’être entré dans son bureau un jour et d’être assis sur ses genoux. J’ai demandé : « Papa, pourquoi ce tableau montre-t-il deux royaumes ? » Notre conversation ce jour-là a déclenché en moi le désir de savoir ce qui s’est passé dans l’histoire avant son tableau, et ce qui s’est passé après. Enfin, à l’âge adulte, j’ai étudié l’histoire d’Israël et j’ai vu la situation dans son ensemble par moi-même.
J’ai pris beaucoup de mes idées pour cette chronologie en observant ma mère qui était artiste et enseignante à l’École du Dimanche. Chaque semaine, alors qu’elle préparait ses leçons, elle dessinait des figures et des images comme supports pédagogiques pour sa classe. J’ai donc grandi avec un amour de la Bible ainsi qu’un amour pour l’art et le dessin.
La combinaison de l’histoire et de l’art m’a aidé. En lisant le document source original, l’Ancien Testament ou Tenach avec une certaine connaissance de l’hébreu, et en étudiant auprès d’enseignants bibliques juifs et chrétiens, j’ai enregistré ce que j’ai appris dans cette chronologie amusante et colorée. J’ai aimé le faire et j’ai tellement appris que j’ai décidé de le partager avec les autres.
As a child I was curious about Israel's history. My father was a pastor who loved charts and timelines, and one particular chart on his study wall showed the Kings and Prophets of the Southern Kingdom of Judah and the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
I recall coming into his study one day and sitting on his lap. I asked, "Daddy, why does this chart show two kingdoms?" Our conversation that day triggered a desire in me to know what happened in history before his chart, and what happened afterward. Finally as an adult I studied Israel's history and saw the big picture for myself.
I took many of my ideas for this timeline from observing my mother who was an artist and Sunday School teacher. Each week as she prepared her lessons she would draw figures and images as teaching aids for her class. So I grew up with a love of the Bible as well as a love for art and drawing.
The combination of history and art helped me out. As I read the original source document, the Old Testament or Tenach with some knowledge of Hebrew, and studied from Jewish and Christian Bible teachers, I recorded what I learned in this fun and colorful timeline. I enjoyed doing it and I learned so much, that I decided to share it with others.
