Frequently asked questions
What are “tracking flats” and why is the tracking limited?
A “flat” is a thin, machinable envelope—similar to a standard white mailing envelope—used for items such as stickers, prints, or small paper goods. Because flats are processed like letters, they are significantly cheaper to mail than parcels.
Etsy offers a low-cost “tracked” option for these flats by using a special label issued through its postal partner. This label generates a tracking number inside Etsy’s system (via Pitney Bowes), but it is not the same as full USPS parcel tracking. The tracking is designed to confirm shipment and delivery for Etsy orders, not to provide step-by-step carrier scans.
Why doesn’t the tracking appear on USPS.com?
Tracking for flats is extremely limited because these envelopes are not classified as parcels. USPS does not scan flats the same way it scans packages. The tracking number Etsy provides may be accepted into the mail stream, but it often will not display intermediate scans or delivery details on USPS.com.
In many cases, Etsy will show the tracking events even when USPS.com does not.
Why does it sometimes say “Delivered” when it wasn’t?
This can happen for several reasons:
- Automated Delivery Confirmation: Some flats are marked “Delivered” automatically after a final sort, even if the carrier has not performed a doorstep scan.
- Mailbox vs. Doorstep: Flats are usually placed in a mailbox, mailroom, or cluster box. They may be marked “Delivered” even if the recipient has not checked that location yet.
- Routing or Scan Limitations: Since flats do not get full scans, the system may apply a “Delivered” status once it reaches the destination facility, even if the envelope is still en route.
If your tracking shows “Delivered” but you have not received the item, please check your mailbox, mailroom, neighbors, or leasing office, and then message me for further assistance.
What does “limited tracking” mean for customers?
Limited tracking provides proof that postage was purchased and that the item entered the mail system. However, it does not offer continuous tracking updates, and it does not include signature confirmation or insurance.
For valuable orders or for customers who want detailed USPS tracking, upgraded shipping is strongly recommended.
How are these items packaged?
Tracked flats are shipped in a standard white envelope—thin, flexible, and machinable. This helps keep shipping affordable but means:
- The envelope may bend during processing.
- USPS treats it as letter mail, not a parcel.
- It receives fewer scans and does not include signature confirmation.
If you prefer your order shipped in a rigid mailer or padded parcel with full tracking, please choose an upgraded shipping option.
