PAN-GENERATIONAL EMBROIDERY WITH PERSONALITY
Hi! I'm Jean, Chicago lady and Chief Spinster behind Sew Choice.
The common thread across my shop is hand embroidery, whether I'm working with a traditional fabric surface or alternative material like paper or cardboard. Pieces reflect my fascination for language, letters, and type - and love of color, texture, and pattern. You can learn more about me and my work below and on Instagram @sewchoice.
I've always been drawn to needle and thread as a means of artistic expression, but only in the last year (newly free from the bounds of a 9 to 5!) have I started to unearth like 15 years of ideas and bring them to life through Sew Choice.
I went to school for Spanish Translation, and my jobs have always involved writing, so I tend to find inspiration in cultural connection and put words front & center. Another influence is the impulse to create from existing sources. I learned at a young age to appreciate how secondhand discoveries not only make for a more interesting process and end product, but they help me tread a little lighter in my production.
I work from my home studio, where I don't have coworkers anymore, but I do have beautiful Humboldt Park at my 9 o'clock and a small orange monster who has bullied himself into the role of Chief Meowketing Officer. I told him, knock yourself out, because if there's one thing I learned from corporate America, it’s that job titles are for the birds.
