Luxurious One-of-a-kind Silk Velvet

Etching silk velvet is created by stenciling a paste that erodes the rayon hair but leaves behind the silk backing.
I use a hairbrush to remove the extra hairs that are still on the surface. I now have a white scarf with my design.
Once the scarf is made, the painting process begins. I dye the entire scarf one color-the background color.
I mix watery dyes with thickening seaweed so I can hand paint with with them. Soda ash is added as a fixative.
I continue to mix different colors as I paint the rayon shapes in the design. This takes me about 45 minutes.

Making a "burn-out velvet" scarf

For me, handmade means organic design inspired by and rooted in nature — hand-painted patterns, growing and evolving, sometimes accidental and frozen in time. I am inspired by how light illuminates and creates infinite hues, in iridescent silk or glass. Colors create moods and their combinations tell stories.

Trained as a painter at RISD, I moved to San Francisco as a young artist and found selling crafts I made at street fairs to be an incredibly fun way to pay the rent. My creations were picked up by boutiques and galleries, now expanding nationwide. If you are gallery hopping in Asheville, N.C., visit Gallery of The Mountain and if you are vacationing on Cape Cod visit Sail Away Studio in Wareham. There you can actually touch the silk velvet, and feel it's softness against your skin.

My studio is built in the home, outside Boston, I share with my husband and two young children, who sometimes sit beside me and make their own creations while I am painting scarves.
