About SheritLevinTextiles

Etching silk velvet is created by stenciling a paste that erodes the rayon hair but leaves behind the silk backing. -
I use a hairbrush to remove the extra hairs that are still on the surface. I now have a white scarf with my design. -
Once the scarf is made, the painting process begins. I dye the entire scarf one color-the background color. -
I mix watery dyes with thickening seaweed so I can hand paint with with them. Soda ash is added as a fixative. -
I continue to mix different colors as I paint the rayon shapes in the design. This takes me about 45 minutes.
