Giving voice to Earth: Clay that Sings
I am living in Hawaii, in middle of the Pacific, on the Big Island, far away from high profile galleries. I love Etsy for connecting me with the rest of the world! Meanwhile, I get to be immersed in the Life force, Aloha and beauty of this Island.
In my sculpture, I play with themes of transformation, layers of personality, and relationship with self and others. I investigate the human body as container, not closed off from its environment, but an open vessel for Life that flows through us,
in relationship to All That Is.
For the past 13 years, my love affair with clay has expanded into the realm of sound. I have become fascinated with coaxing sound and music out of clay, making single and multi-chambered ocarinas and flutes. It began with making an ocarina for Shairy, a sound healer from Ecuador, which began an obsession that I couldn't quit! Janie Rezner, who studied with Sharon Rowell, introduced me to making huacas (multi-chambered ocarinas) and I fell in love with their haunting, sweet and dimensional sound. Playing them is meditative and centering. My instruments are now in the collections of musicians, sound healers and everyday folks around the world. These types of double ocarinas are really quite user friendly, and you do not have to be "a musician" to enjoy playing them.
