Here at Soap Distillery, we make bath and body products inspired by cocktails, liquors, liqueurs, beer, wine, and the like. This original company has been handcrafting unique booze themed bath and body care since 2012! These products are not designed to make you smell like an alcoholic, however. What we do is we start with the base notes of the inspiration, and build a fragrance blend around it. For example, our Bourbon soap won't make you smell like you've been drinking all night, but it will make you smell like vanilla, vetiver, and clove: very warm and mildly sweet. It's a treat!

====================================================================

Direct checkout and gift cards accepted.

For custom orders (custom fragrances, custom look, wedding soaps, party soaps, etc), please contact us through etsy or email! We can do just about anything. Please allow 4-6 weeks for soap orders.

Due to the handmade nature of products such as what is in this shop, there may be some slight differences in size, color, texture and fragrance from one batch to the next. It's to be expected with handmade products. We follow our recipes to a "T" to avoid this as much as possible, however, it does not mean that your product is defective.

Don't settle for less. You deserve better.

Hi. I'm Danielle. Soap Maker. Formulator. Designer. I first started making soap because I was unsatisfied with the ingredients and fragrances in the "all natural" section of my local grocery store. I thought the essential oil offerings were pretty boring, and I could never find products that had the perfect ingredients in them. I'd often find stuff to try, and wouldn't enjoy it at all. Either it was too drying, had ingredients that I wanted to avoid, or was just tired. How many times could I see a lavender soap or a patchouli orange perfume oil? Don't get me wrong, these blends are fine, especially if you love simplicity. I loved my lemon room spray but I just needed something different. I needed something more unique. I needed simple ingredients with complex fragrance blends and I couldn't find anything like what I wanted. So, I tried my hand at making a Patchouli Fig soap with a little beeswax added, and I never turned back. My next challenge: how do I make this stuff "unique"? How do I give my soap a character that can't be duplicated, or even properly imitated?

Since I was old enough to drink in Chicago, I've been interested in the chemistry of a good cocktail. It often starts with high end spirits that have been specially crafted to stand out from the crowd, and those spirits are made with clean, raw ingredients that have their own individual character. Each ingredient used in different amounts can make or break a spirit, and what you have left after this crafting process is a smooth tasting aromatic perfume of a base that's smoky, or sharp, or piney, or sweet (unless it's vodka. Then its just clean). These drinkable perfumes are what makes good cocktails taste (and smell) so - damn - good. So, I thought one day, I bet I could make a bourbon SOAP. Shortly thereafter, Soap Distillery was born.

We pride ourselves in only using the best ingredients we can get our hands on, and testing our formulations for months to years to make sure we are offering products that are great to use and look good too. Think of picking up someone in a bar. You see them from across the room, and you're hooked on them at first sight. Imagine your disappointment when you get over to them, and they've got nothing good to say? This is why our products are the whole package. They look great, feel great, and our customers enjoy using them. From organic to sustainable, our special line of items have it all. It's the guy that dresses nice AND smells good. It's the lady that could be a model that teaches physics. You will not be disappointed. Take a shower with our Gin soap and leave that hangover for someone else.

I love making cocktails. At some point in my life, I discovered that I loved making soap. I've always loved making things, so it just makes sense that I combined the two into the same thing, right? But enough about me, how's about you?

Additional policies and FAQs
Sorry (#notsorry), but here's a bunch of boring stuff you should know:

Items will arrive as described on our website. Our products are 100% handmade, and because of the nature of these products. Variation in color, texture, size is to be expected. We don't use robot fingers over here.

Soap Distillery is not liable, nor can we take any responsibility for slips, falls or any injury, bodily or otherwise. Please use caution when using oils in the shower or otherwise, especially wet surfaces.

Soap Distillery is also not liable, nor can we take any responsibility for any reactions to any products. If you have sensitivities or allergies, please make sure to check the ingredients on each item you are interested in before purchasing or contact us if you have any concerns/specific sensitivities.

Unless you are approved as a wholesaler by Soap Distillery, these products are not to be used for resale.

In accordance with the CPSIA act, effective 2/2009, nothing sold by Soap Distillery is primarily intended for use by persons aged 12 & under. Also, we don't recommend our soaps for children (especially under the age of three), as they have a tendency to get soap in their eyes. Soap, although very safe for the skin, can be irritating if it goes past your eyelid into the tender bits. We don't want your itty bitty one to be sad because they have soap in their eye. Please contact us if you have questions.

FAQ

Yeah, that was a weird question. But, no worries, it's cool. We've got some answers.

Q. Will your products make me smell like I've been drinking?

A. No, only that beer in your hand and that shot of whiskey in front of you will make you smell like you've been drinking. Seriously though, we use proprietary blend of oils in all of our products that give them the amazing scent that they have, and a little of that scent gets left behind. Instead of smelling like booze, you'll smell clean and like lavender, juniper, cedarwood, or other fragrances.

Q. Can your body oils be used as perfume?

A. Technically, the answer is yes and no. Yes if you don't like strong fragrances, but no if you do. We like to use a lower fragrance load in our products to help prevent irritation. Irritation is often caused by products being fragranced far too high. Check out out perfumes instead if you want a stronger scent left behind.

Q. Can I use your body oils or perfume oils in a diffuser? I bet I can.

A. Sorry #notsorry, but no, you can't. Our body oils and perfume oils contain base oils like sweet almond oil, and are not made to be placed in a diffuser. Because they aren't pure fragrance and contain base oils, it makes them body safe. But you cannot, I repeat, cannot, and should not, use them in a diffuser, put drops on your pillow, put drops in your laundry, or etc. This would be equivalent to going in your kitchen, grabbing the olive oil, and trying to diffuse it or wash with it. No one wants that.

Q. How long does a bar last in the shower?

A. Our 4 oz bars last about 2.5 weeks with a shower everyday, on average. Sometimes longer if you take army showers. Keeping the bars in a well draining dish or rack and having them completely dry in between use is the key to having your bars last as long as possible.

Q. Are you products edible?

A. Oh lord, no! I know they smell good enough to eat, but just no. Please don't. We use many food grade ingredients but Soap Distillery does not make food: we make soap. Only approved kitchens can make products that are edible.

Q. What is the shelf life of your soap?

A. Technically endless. But after about 6 months to a year, the fragrance isn't as strong and no one likes a wimpy smelling soap. Scrubs should be used within 3 months of opening since they come in contact with water. Body oils, beard oils, perfume oils, bath salts, and other products are best within a year of the production date.

Q. How do you develop your fragrances?

A. The blends come from a combination of how cocktails/spirits/beer/wine tastes and smells. That way we can develop a more well rounded fragrance.

Q. I don't like soap made with lye. Does your soap contain lye?

A. Nerd alert: The funny thing is that, hand and body soaps don't actually contain lye. However, there isn't a single soap on this planet that doesn't use lye to eventually become soap. I'm gonna get all science-y on you here, but the reason why soaps don't actually contain lye but need it, is that it goes through a process called saponification. Oils are mixed with a solution of sodium hydroxide (lye) and a water based liquid, and the chemical reaction we call saponification turns the mixture into soap. If it's a true soap, this is the process. We don't list sodium hydroxide in the final ingredients list because all of the lye is used to convert the vegetable oils. If you want to get really nerdy, we can say this as an example of a simple coconut soap: sodium hydroxide (NaOH) + Coconut oil (cocos nucifera) = sodium cocoate. That's coconut soap! Science is f***ing amazing. Someone please tell Neil DeGrasse Tyson I know that. I don't care if he's an astrophysicist.

Q. Can I use your soaps on my face?

A. Yeah, bro! You can use our soaps all over. They are not tear free as no soap is (thank you very much, sodium), so use caution around little ones.

Q. You live in Chicago, so do you like the band Chicago?

A. Chicago is the sh**!

Q. I live in Chicago and don't want to pay shipping. Can I pick my items up from you?

A. Totes, malotes, dawg. Just put "local pick up" in the notes of your order and we'll be in touch!

Q. What is your privacy policy, and what the heck are cookies? Do you bake them?

A. Yes, we sometimes bake cookies, but not the internet kind. Please check out our privacy policy to learn more about it and what cookies really are.
