Several years ago, as my four kids became teenagers, I was trying to find a way to supplement my income to pay for their college education. I had sold stamps to collectors throughout the years more as a hobby than a business. Then, I bought a collection at auction that included a box of First Day Covers. A First Day Cover is created when the Post Office issues a stamp. A city is selected for this honor such as Stockbridge, MA where the Norman Rockwell stamp was issued. On the first day, you may only purchase the stamp in that city. Collectors place the stamps on specially designed envelopes and have them cancelled on the day of issuance creating a First Day Cover. I then came up with the idea of combining these with with relevant pictures to make an unique collectible that is an ideal gift for the person who has everything.
So, I taught myself how to cut mats and went to work creating collages that were unique collectibles. I enjoyed immediate success and paid for my children's college education. Just when the last one was getting ready to graduate, my job was eliminated due to downsizing. So, my sales allowed me to make a living as opposed to paying for education. Later, I expanded my product line. As well as First Day Covers, I added autographs. Not an autograph expert, I purchase my autographs from dealers who are registered as dealers with the Universal Autograph Collectors Club to guard against fraudulent autographs. Each picture I list with Etsy is individually handmade by me - a true collectible.
