Frequently asked questions

Do you take custom orders?

Yes we do! We are happy to work with you on modifications to existing designs, or new ideas, within reason. Please note that this does change the delivery timeframe on most pieces due to the need for personalized service to the product you wish to have customized.

Feel free to send us a message with your request and we will discuss the timeframe and additional charges. Custom orders generally take 4-8 weeks to ship, but vary depending on our custom order backlog and the complexity of your order. We will give you our best estimate and will always keep you up to date.

What colors do you offer?

For most of our products, we offer three different colors: black, dark brown, and tobacco. Our tobacco color is our lightest color, a beautiful ruddy light brown shade. This color can vary a bit but we are working toward standardizing this color across all of our products. We do our best to depict the accurate shade in our listings.

What kind of leather do you use?

We use full grain, vegetable tanned cowhide from the United States for all of our bags, accessories, and wallets. We occasionally use full grain, chrome tanned cowhide or water buffalo leather for special items and limited runs of certain designs. Each listing always details which type of leather is used for the product, but our default is veg-tan cowhide.

What is water buffalo leather?

Occasionally, we will list limited runs of items made with water buffalo leather. This leather is a bit lighter than our veg-tan cowhide, with a more visible grain and a subtle matte finish. This option is great for people who want to save a bit of money while still getting the top-notch quality and craftsmanship of Solid Leather's leather bag designs.

Water buffalo leather is known for its natural texture and supple feel. It has long been used in top-of-the-line leather goods, including wallets, duffel bags, backpacks, and boots. It’s a proven leather with many high end applications and applications that require durability and longevity.

Care instructions

Keeping your leather well conditioned ensures that your Solid Leather product looks great for years to come. A good leather conditioner will maintain your bag's patina while keeping it clean and lustrous.

Some prefer the rugged look of full grain leather, but if you want to remove a scratch, apply conditioner or simply rub the leather to buff it out.

We recommend Dropforge Leather Care products, available on their website. Apply conditioner with a soft towel or sponge (we’ve even found that a mismatched sock works perfectly!). Rub it into the leather using small circles and allow it to dry for ~30min. You will notice the difference immediately and the conditioner will keep your leather nourished and protected for the next few months.

What does "vintage" leather mean?

We refer to our full grain, chrome tanned cowhide leather as "vintage" because it has a more rustic look than our veg-tan cowhide. This leather is tanned differently and has a less waxy, more matte finish. It will break in quickly and gain a beautiful patina with time. We occasionally list items made with this "vintage" chrome tan leather for those who prefer a more rugged appearance than our polished veg-tan leather. Because this leather is less expensive, you can get a great deal on a handmade leather bag that will last you a lifetime.

What does pre-order mean?

When you pre-order, you reserve an item from the next batch our craftsmen make. It usually takes 4-8 weeks to receive a pre-ordered item.

We have several listings that are designated as pre-orders in the title, product details, and delivery timeframe. If you don’t feel comfortable pre-paying for a pre-order in full, please contact us and we’ll discuss possible options. If there's an item that's out of stock, we'd be happy to set up a private listing so you can pre-order the item!

Sizing details

This question comes through frequently. The absolute best way for you to determine if your laptop is going to fit in a particular briefcase, backpack, or satchel is to measure it and then compare it to the dimensions listed on the product's detail section. Grab a ruler or tape measure or use Google to search the dimensions (this is what we do to answer your question). If the laptop dimensions are smaller than the dimensions of the bag, it will most likely fit. :) If our product listing only provides external dimensions, subtract approx. 0.5" to get the internal dimensions.
