Announcement   We are a couple of retired geezers that up and moved away from the city a few years back. I retired from the Army and then the Carpenters Union. My wife retired from the US Fish & Wildlife Service. We bought ourselves a 40-acre tree farm and aptly named it Solitude Valley. We have most things we want, all that we need, and more than we deserve.

My wife says that all proceeds go to her and/or she ain't gonna give me none.

If you are ever in our area, stop by and take a gander at the pioneer cabin, barn, outhouse and our wood working shop. There is a nice little stream and river running through the property and trails that you can hike on. The beach is about 20 minutes away. Bring a picnic basket and pitch a tent, (we like fried chicken a lot). Don’t pay a lick of attention to the NO TRESPASSING signs, they're for the tree rustlers.

You won’t find us anywhere but Etsy. We don’t know nothing about Facebook, Twitter or Social media (old dogs, no new tricks) and sorry, but we don’t have a blog. Blog sounds like a derogatory term for log and we don’t say nothing bad about any kind of wood, EXCEPT HOLLYWOOD!

We specialize in rustic, primitive and barn wood signs, but we make many other kinds of signs and country wood stuff. We email and send pictures, as we go, and when we finish. Nail and worm holes are free, knots and knotty wood are not. Wood is wood, unless it’s knot wood. Why the heck knot?

I peck on the computer, cut and sand the wood then design the signs, and my wife brings them to life with chisels, router, paint and the like. We take pride in what we make from start to finish and hope you fall in love with what you buy from us. We enjoy making signs, so we know you will enjoy owning one. Please let us know what you need and we will figure out a way to make it happen.

My wife says that all proceeds go to her and/or she ain't gonna give me none.

About

Dad always said, WOOD DON'T GROW ON TREES YA KNOW or some crap like that

After a 23-year career in the Army, I decided to knuckle under to my yearning for creating things with wood. I joined the carpenters union and enjoyed working at Disney World, NASA, and a nuclear power plant. I still haven’t decided if I’m a Mickey Mouse, rocket, or atomic carpenter. My wife retired from the US Fish and wildlife service and together we moved, back to the Pacific North West. Though semiretired, we needed to make some weekend spending money, so we renovated turn of the century houses for fun and a paycheck. Somehow, we got it in our heads that we needed some chickens and spent several weeks scheming and planning and several more building a perfect chicken coop. Everybody that seen it wanted one. We never did get the chickens; instead, we put together a shop in our spare bedroom and built chicken coops as fast as we could for about a year. That's when we learned how to sell handcrafted stuff on the internet. At first just Craigslist, then we discovered this wonderful site called Etsy where nice people like you, buy fun to make stuff from people like us.

A while back, we all went crazy and bought some way back in the woods property in Oregon. Besides a nice house, the property came with a nice big wood WORKshop, an original pioneer cabin, barn, 2-seat outhouse, and several outbuildings. We thought we were going to sit back, watch the trees grow and admire the deer and elk eating apples in our orchard. Then all these darn hunters started trespassing. We love watching the critters and never have been fond of people trespassin, raisin hell, an shootin up or place. My wife and I started making funny, but to the point no trespassing signs, the neighbors seen them and wanted us to make some for them. After me made a bunch, we needed more wood, saw blades, chisels, router bits and a band saw. So, here we are on this merry go round, make and sell stuff to get more material and tools to make and sell more stuff to get more…. Now I gotta tell ya, we ain’t never been known for being great artists. However, with your inspiration, we will make you a dang good sign, and though we will never be satisfied or finished with your sign. We will pick the best place to stop and ship you that dang good sign. By the way, we gave up on the retirement idea. There is just too much dead wood, waiting to be re-loved and given a new life “HANGING AROUND AT YOUR HOUSE”.

OUR SHOP PLEDGE:
The wood we use at Solitude Valley is earth friendly, heart healthy, low calorie, and organically grown in old-fashioned dirty dirt. Green is not just a slogan for us; the trees we get our wood from were green before they died of natural causes. We don’t use pesticides, antibiotics or steroids in our wood, so we are a super natural sign choice. We do however put a lot of all-weather UV urethane finish on our signs, cause ain’t nothing better to beautify and make wood weather tight.

We can make the sign/s of your dreams, no doubt we can do anything with just about nothing.

Ever vigilant Jake the Lab and nip at your heals Missy the Corgi discourage tree rustlers and the mail man. We have four cats Grant, Smoky, Prince and Olivia. But they are undercover mouse police, so they won't let us take pictures.

WELCOME
Thanks for visiting us at SOLITUDE VALLEY. We are a retired couple that up and moved to the backwoods a while ago. We discovered a love for natural wood and a hidden talent making unique things with it. Our sign creations are handmade mostly from re-pourposed wood or wood from trees that died of natural causes, but we use new wood if you insist. We have many species of wood; a lot is unidentifiable, totally unique, and beautiful. We have a complete pioneer farm, including cabin, barn, outhouse and out buildings just waiting to be reused. In our shop, you will find a variety of handmade woodcraft's, from custom hand routed wood signs (OUR SPECIALTY), to Lucky Cluck chicken coops. Besides what we have posted, we will CUSTOM make any sign you would like. Because of the care, we put into all our creations, typical custom production time is about 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the size and complexity of your project.

The sign stand, trees and river in the background of our pictures are not included with the signs and most of the pictures have my cup of coffee that you can use to visualize size.

Shipping
The time I need to prepare an order for shipping varies. For details, see individual items. For custom signs we put $0 for the shipping cost, because we will calculate your shipping cost when we know your zip code and exactly what you want. We make signs more for enjoyment than as a business, so we will not hurry (that includes shipping). There may or may not be other signs ahead of yours, it there are we won’t hurry on them either. We look through our wood sheds, select wood, take pictures and make mockups; you select the wood and mockup then give your approval to start. From that point it takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the size and complexity. We are so confident in our work that we don’t worry about payment until your sign is finished, if you don’t like the sign we will just keep it for ourselves, give it a good home and treat it just like one of our own. We haven’t kept a sign yet.
Refunds and Exchanges
Refunds grudgingly given, if you return the item before you get it and then only if you have a damn good reason, JUST KIDDING, if you don’t like the sign we made for you, you don’t pay us. If you already paid we will give your money back, shipping included. We don’t make signs for profit; we make them for your and our enjoyment.
Additional policies and FAQs
We are now shipping custom signs to Canada, if you live there, when we get your address we will give you the shipping cost.
