Designed, not assembled
I’ve always believed a quilt should be more than something that keeps you warm. Quilts bring comfort. They wrap us in softness, familiarity, even memories of the people we love. A quilt should be something you love to look at, something you want to use, and sometimes, something that tells a story.
I’m Debbie, the quiltmaker and designer behind Spare Threads. I create one-of-a-kind handmade quilts and custom memory quilts from my studio in Georgia.
When someone trusts me with clothing that holds a lifetime of memories, I don’t see a stack of shirts waiting to be cut into squares. I see color, texture, personality, and possibilities. I take time to consider the individual garments and design a quilt around them—one that preserves what made those pieces meaningful while becoming something beautiful in its own right.
Designed, not assembled.
That’s at the heart of how I approach memory quilts.
The clothes may have belonged to a father, spouse, mother, grandparent, or someone else whose story deserves to be carried forward. Sometimes the details others might remove—a worn spot, a paint stain, a favorite pocket, a clothing label—are exactly the details I want to preserve. They’re part of the story. As I like to say, I don’t filter life out of memory quilts.
Alongside my custom memory quilts, I also create original, ready-to-ship quilts for people who simply love the beauty and comfort of a handmade quilt. Each one is pieced and professionally longarm quilted by me, with careful attention to color, design, texture, and the details that make a quilt feel special.
I’ve been selling my work on Etsy for more than a decade, and one of the greatest compliments I receive is when someone tells me that my memory quilts don’t look like they’re made from someone’s clothes. They look like beautiful quilts.
That’s exactly what I want them to be.
Beautiful quilts. Meaningful stories. Made to be used, loved, and passed on.
Welcome to Spare Threads. I’m glad you’re here. ❤️
