About the Steel Goat Studio and the Collection of Folk Art
SteelGoatStudio offers a wide and fascinating range of wonderful objets d’art, primitive folk art and iconic cultural pieces, many of which I have collected in my travels to many countries. I have always been drawn to hand-crafted and indigenous pieces which illustrate the arts, philosophies and icons of the many cultures and art movements I have been fortunate enough to explore.
Almost at the beginning of my traveling life as a museum professional, I became captivated with the shrines found in so many cultures. I began studying the reasons and objects that people incorporate into the receptacles of sacred relics and remembrances and the methods they use when making them. I really love and admire the idea of creating honorable or sacred places within a container where homage is paid to someone or something of significance.
Many years of creating artistic shrines have commenced. Along with the artifacts I have collected, I use a multitude of found receptacles including wine crates, cigar boxes, orange crates, and even cardboard boxes as the vessels for these assemblages. I strive to achieve depth and texture by using a variety of techniques and materials: as wide ranging as historical stencils, rusty found objects, old book pages, vintage and period wallpaper, and whimsical recycled pieces, all composed in a robust palette with a contemporary slant.
I also offer pieces in their original form in the shop, alongside the pieces I personally create. After years of enjoying many of the artifacts, I have included them in this shop to share with those of you who also appreciate fine hand-crafted, culturally rich pieces.
