L’amour du design (et du brassage à domicile) conduit à une fascination pour le travail du bois sur mesure
A love of design (and home brewing) leads to a fascination for custom woodworking
Suivant les traces de mon père, j’ai obtenu un baccalauréat en génie mécanique de l’Ohio State University en 1997. Peu de temps après, j’ai déménagé à Lexington Kentucky, au cœur du Bluegrass.
J’adore cuisiner, et j’adore concevoir, alors quand j’ai commencé à brasser à la maison en 2001, cela a ouvert un monde de gadgets et d’opportunités pour créer de nouvelles choses. Quelques années plus tard, quand j’ai commencé à faire du kegging, j’ai réalisé que l’un des débouchés créatifs qui me manquerait était de fabriquer des étiquettes pour toutes les bouteilles.
J’ai donc commencé à fabriquer des poignées de robinet en bois pour chaque bière que je brassais; des bières comme « Mango Unchained », une bière de blé mangue, ou « Hostile Witness », un esprit belge. Finalement, j’ai réalisé que j’aimais faire les poignées de robinet plus que la bière elle-même! Mais je ne pouvais pas faire autant de bière.
À cette époque, j’ai commencé à vendre des poignées de robinet à d’autres brasseurs amateurs à Lexington. J’ai découvert que j’aimais le processus créatif et travailler avec les autres pour créer quelque chose de spécial pour eux. Quelque chose qui était lisse et robuste, et qui leur donne une vitrine pour exposer leurs créations et leur marque. Plus je fabriquais de poignées, plus je me ramifiais en différents bois durs. J’ai trouvé que j’appréciais les différents motifs de grain et la couleur du bois qui prenait vie lors de l’application de cette première couche de finition.
En 2014, j’ai ouvert une boutique sur Etsy pour présenter mes créations et mes produits à un public plus large. J’utilise 10 espèces différentes de feuillus, et le seul bois que je tache est le noyer. Sinon, la couleur que vous voyez sur les photos est la couleur naturelle du bois fini.
J’aime travailler avec mes clients sur quelque chose qui sera spécial pour eux et leurs proches. Chaque conception graphique personnalisée est prototypée numériquement et vérifiée avec le client. Une fois que le client est satisfait du design, je commence le processus de gravure et de peinture à la main du design dans la poignée du robinet.

Following in my father's footsteps, I earned a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1997. Shortly thereafter I moved to Lexington Kentucky, in the heart of the Bluegrass.
I love cooking, and I love to design, so when I started homebrewing back in 2001 it opened up a world of gadgets and opportunities to create new things. A couple years later, when I started kegging, I realized that one of the creative outlets I would miss was making labels for all of the bottles.
So I started making wood tap handles for each beer that I brewed; beers like "Mango Unchained", a mango wheat beer, or "Hostile Witness", a Belgian Wit. Eventually I realized that I was enjoying making the tap handles more than the beer itself! But I could only make so much beer.
At that time I started selling tap handles to other homebrewers in Lexington. I found that I loved the creative process and working with others to make something that was special to them. Something that was smooth and robust, and gives them a showcase to display their creations and brand. The more handles I made, the more I branched out into different hardwoods. I found that I enjoyed the different grain patterns and the wood color coming alive when applying that first coat of finish.
In 2014 I opened a shop on Etsy to bring my designs and products to a wider audience. I use 10 different species of hardwoods, and the only wood I stain is Walnut. Otherwise, the color you see in the pictures is the natural color of the finished wood.
I enjoy working with my customers on something that will be special to them and their loved ones. Every custom graphic design is prototyped digitally and verified with the customer. Once the customer is happy with the design, I begin the process of engraving and hand painting the design into the tap handle.
