About

The stranger behind StrangerDays

Hello new stranger, and welcome back old strangers! I'm Lorraine. I'm an American from California who now lives in the Netherlands since 2008. I first arrived here for a one year adventure! It turns out life had a different plan for me. I was having such a great time here that I wanted to stay a little longer. I built a life here. I made friends, met a Dutch guy, and you guessed it - I fell in love! That guy is now my husband, but more on that later. In 2010 I wanted to fly home for the holidays and visit my family. I had no money, and things weren't looking great for me here. I couldn't speak the language, and I couldn't find a job. I was working as a nanny/Au Pair for a Dutch family at the time.AND I had no idea where my relationship was going with my dutch guy. There was a silver lining though! I discovered Etsy. I was inspired by all the amazing artisians on Etsy, and saw that some of them made a living on selling their art or whatever it was they were good at. I thought - I can do that! Or at least try to do that. But what was I good at? I didn't know. I evenutually figured it out. So began my story. I created a shop and sold posters. It is still here on Etsy if your curious. It's called "Mursblanc" - Skipping ahead a bit in the story - a year later I started another shop (Hipstercases) and sold iPhone cases with my designs on them. Skipping ahead again - in 2012 I created this shop StrangerDays. I was very homesick in 2012, and missed my friends and family. I went to the local stores and tried to find greeting cards that said just how much I missed my friends and family. I discovered that there were not many cards out there in English (everything was in Dutch) - and that greeting cards weren't popular here. So I decided to make my own. I chose the name " StrangerDays" because I felt like my cards weren't the standard cards you would send to a friend, and some of my cards didn't need an occasion. It also had a deeper meaning for me. I was a stranger in a strange country, and felt a bit lost and alone. I didn't know my purpose yet, or what I was doing here. Every day felt strange when you're a stranger! After I made my shop everything became clear. I wanted to live here. I wanted to marry my Dutch guy, and I wanted to take my greeting cards seriously. I wanted to make greeting cards that were a bit strange, emptional, and different. So I made it official. I went to the government here and I got a buisness! A real buisness. Complete with a VAT Id number, and everything! I was grown up! I made it! I signed a bunch of fancy documents, and I was on my way. This was no longer a hobby - this was my everything. Since then I have made a lot of cards. A lot. I found it comforting, and it made me really happy. It was my way to connect with people, and express myself. See - I'm an introvert. AND this was my way to express myself without violating my private nature. I'm not exactly shy, but I'm the kind of person that keeps to myself and doesn't need to go to parties. I actually don't like parties. I know right?! So present day: I'm married to my Dutch guy (so romantic and cliche) and we bought a house, and live happily ever after. ( With bills, and laundry, and little life dramas of day to day things) and we are happy. We have a two year old German Shephard named Billie, and I breed LoveBirds. Those are the tiny loud parrots with beautiful colors, and loud personalites. I work from home in my little office, and I do it all alone. Well my dog helps ;) but mostly with breaks. Play breaks, and walking breaks are important! I print my cards, fold them, package them. I don't use a fancy printing company, and I don't have any interns. It's just me making my truly "handmade" cards. I use high quality products, and I use enviromently friendly materials. The earth matters to me. When I'm not walking Billie, or playing with my lovebirds, I'm working here. Working hard. Making cards. Hoping that you love them as much as I do. My cards are inspired by my feelings about others, things I say to my husband, and just in general emotional mini poems or outbursts. And I guess you guys do like my cards because I'm still here! Thank you for all your support! I always wanted to a be a writer. I guess I am. Greeting Cards are like little stories right? So that is my story, and how I ended up on Etsy as a greeting card maker. Thank you for visiting me today, and giving me the chance to quietly imprint on the world in a loving and strange way... with words and paper!
xoxo,
Lorraine
