There's just something about striking a match

I've been a candle and incense lover for years and tolerated using ugly lighters and match boxes, despite always preferring to strike matches.

In 2004, while browsing pottery at an art festival, I saw these neat handmade oil warmers and incense holders, and I thought "what if" there was something similar to hold my matches and have a striking surface of some kind. Fast forward through several years of research and experiments, discovering the world of antique match holders and strikers, learning more about match production than I ever wanted to know, and *most* importantly -- finding the right containers I was looking for and matchstick manufacturers that sold sheets of match strike paper -- and here we are. That of course is a very condensed version of how this all went down, but bottom line, persistence is what got these match holders to the market.

We've officially been in business since the summer of 2011 and looking forward to connecting to more and more matchstick lovers each year.

It's natural and common for striker sheets to have small spots or blemishes, especially around the edges, but some have more than others. They all function the same. The categories below are strictly based on appearance.

PREMIUM/Excellent sheets are generally smooth with consistent color and few blemishes, if any. They are the best of bunch, but when they're gone, they're gone - until I order new inventory, around 3 times per year.

PLUS/Good sheets have some spots or blemishes but are easily ignored or can be cut around. They are ideal for most craft projects. Similar to premium sheets, they are in limited supply.

BASIC/Fair sheets have many and/or larger spots or blemishes - like smudges, streaks, spots, discoloration, creases, tears. Most sheets are like this, and I usually have plenty on hand.

Do you sell the matchsticks by themselves?

Yes, we have 4" matchsticks come in black, white, red, pink, yellow, brown, green, orange, turquoise, white on black, and black on black. 11" matchsticks in black and white. 1.75" matchsticks in pink, blue, and purple.

Where do you get your loose matchsticks?

I don't get them from anywhere. They are neither manufactured nor imported like this. All matchsticks are packed into boxes, then usually shrink wrapped, and then sent overseas to US importers like the ones I use (see details in the next section). I manually prepare the packets of loose matchsticks myself as a courtesy since so many customers have requested it. They are mainly for retail sale, not wholesale, so I do not have unlimited quantities.

Do you offer bulk pricing on the matchsticks?

I can offer bulk pricing on a case by case basis, but I'm mostly setup for retail sales. If you need more than 50 matchboxes, you're better off contacting my suppliers (importers) directly.

I get the pre-printed 4" matchboxes with designs from HomArt, based in Irvine, CA. If you have a sales & tax use certificate, you can set up a wholesale account with them pretty quickly. Minimum order is $100 and their turnaround time is 1-3 weeks, if the item is in stock.

If you have more lead time and need even larger quantities of matchboxes, then I recommend my other supplier, Maryland Match, based in Baltimore. Their MOQ is 1,000 matchboxes and turnaround time is 3-4 months for 4" and 11" matchboxes, and 9-12 weeks for 2" matchboxes. Further, they are a full-service printing house, so you can either get the boxes plain or with your own custom design.

Can I get custom printing on the matchboxes?

No, I don't do custom printing on the matchboxes. See the above question for details about one of my suppliers, Maryland Match, which is a printing company as well as matchstick importer.

Does the match striker paper work with safety matches?

Yes, they work with safety matches and strike-anywhere matches, though strike-anywhere matches require more strikes.

Isn't the striker material actually just fine sandpaper?

No. This is actual match striker material imported from matchstick manufacturers. It's the exact material used on matchboxes, matchbooks, etc.

Does the match striker paper only come in shades of black or brown?

Yes. That's due to the chemical nature of phosphorus. Believe me, if I could get the sheets in different colors, I would!

Can you do custom striker shapes?

Yes. I use a Silhouette Cameo cutting machine to create all kinds of shapes and letters, just not too small or intricate because you need enough space to strike the matches, plus the material can tear easily when cutting it and/or peeling it off my cutting mat. All I need is a jpeg or gif of an image that has an outline that can be "traced"; you can send me your own or I can find one for you. Once we agree on a shape, I will send you samples. If you are satisfied, I charge a one-time $15 custom design fee to the final order.

Do you offer expedited shipping?

Yes, but you have to purchase it separately; see my Shipping Add-Ons section. To automate expedited shipping on the listings, I have to include Etsy's calculations for regular first class package, which it's higher than the $2.75 flat rate that I already charge.

Usually, I can ship overnight without a problem via USPS Express (starts at $25), FedEx (starts at $50), or UPS (starts at $65). FedEx and UPS overnight services are generally more reliable than USPS Express. My cut off times are as follows, all Eastern Standard Time: US Postal Service 4PM. UPS 6PM. FedEx 7PM.

Why is the shipping cost so high for the match strike paper and shapes?

For the match strike paper, I use a thick cardboard mailer to protect the sheets and keep them flat. For the match striker shapes, I ship them via bubble packs.

In both cases, this changes the shipping class from letter to package, and also, to include tracking, I have to ship via package class, which in turn costs more to mail. However, if you don't care if sheets might get bent during shipping and tracking may not be available, I can package them in a regular flat envelope which brings the shipping cost down a little.

For US customers, the shipping doesn't decrease that much, but for overseas customers, the difference is significant. However, if you order a lot of sheets, the weight alone will drive the shipping cost back up, regardless of packaging. Message me or request a custom order with the number of sheets you want, your country, and your postal code, and I will calculate shipping for you.
