There's just something about striking a match

I've been a candle and incense lover for years and tolerated using ugly lighters and match boxes, despite always preferring to strike matches.

In 2004, while browsing pottery at an art festival, I saw these neat handmade oil warmers and incense holders, and I thought "what if" there was something similar to hold my matches and have a striking surface of some kind. Fast forward through several years of research and experiments, discovering the world of antique match holders and strikers, learning more about match production than I ever wanted to know, and *most* importantly -- finding the right containers I was looking for and matchstick manufacturers that sold sheets of match strike paper -- and here we are. That of course is a very condensed version of how this all went down, but bottom line, persistence is what got these match holders to the market.

We've officially been in business since the summer of 2011 and looking forward to connecting to more and more matchstick lovers each year.

It's natural and common for striker sheets to have small spots or blemishes, especially around the edges, but some have more than others.

PREMIUM/Excellent sheets are generally smooth with consistent color, with few blemishes, if any. They are the best of bunch, but when they're gone, they're gone - until I order new inventory, which is usually twice per year.

REGULAR/Good sheets have some spots or blemishes but are easily ignored or can be cut around. They are ideal for most craft projects. Similar to premium sheets, they are in limited supply.

BARGAIN BIN/Fair sheets have many and/or larger spots or blemishes - like smudges, streaks, spots, discoloration, creases, tears - but they work just fine.

Do you sell the matchsticks by themselves?
Yes, we have 4" matchsticks come in black, white, red, pink, yellow, brown, green, and black on black. 11" matchsticks come in black. Please message me beforehand if you need more than 20 units; I'm still sorting out inventory levels.

Does the match striker paper work with safety matches?
Yes, they work with safety matches and strike-anywhere matches.

Isn't the striker material actually just fine sandpaper?
No. This is actual match striker material imported from matchstick manufacturers. It's the exact material used on matchboxes, matchbooks, etc.

Does the match striker paper only come in shades of black or brown?
Yes. That's due to the chemical nature of phosphorus. Believe me, if I could get the sheets in different colors, I would!

Can you do custom striker shapes?
Yes. I use a Silhouette Cameo cutting machine to create all kinds of shapes and letters, just not too small or intricate because you need enough space to strike the matches, plus the material can tear easily when cutting it and/or peeling it off my cutting mat. All I need is a jpeg or gif of an image that has an outline that can be "traced"; you can send me your own or I can find one for you. Once we agree on a shape, I will send you samples. If you are satisfied, I charge a one-time $15 custom design fee to the final order.

Do you offer overnight shipping?
Usually, I can ship overnight without a problem via US Postal Service (starts at $20), FedEx (starts at $50), or UPS (starts at $65). If your order is urgent, please message me, and I'll do my best to accommodate your situation. FedEx and UPS are generally more reliable than the US Postal Service overnight (express) service. My cut off times are as follows, all Eastern Standard Time: US Postal Service 4PM. UPS 5PM. FedEx 6:30PM.

Why is the shipping cost so high for the striker sheets?
I use a thick cardboard mailer to protect the sheets and keep them flat. This adds weight and changes the package class (vs a regular flat envelope) to one that enables tracking, which in turns costs more to mail. However, if you don't care if sheets might get bent during shipping and tracking may not be available, I can package them in a regular flat envelope which brings the shipping cost down a little. For US customers, the shipping doesn't decrease that much, but for overseas customers, the difference is significant. However, if you order a lot of sheets, the weight alone will drive the shipping cost back up, regardless of packaging. Message me or request a custom order with the number of sheets you want, your country and postal code, and I will calculate shipping for you.
