Rustic, Nubbly Textures

I live in Boston, MA and love fabric, color and texture. I learned needlework as a child -- crocheting, knitting, embroidery -- and have had a life-long love of textiles and fiber-related hand-working skills. My currently focus is making felt -- an age-old alchemical process in which sheep fleece is transformed into a durable, non-woven fabric. I also sew and dye fabric, and whenever possible I incorporate recycled fabric into my work.

My goal is to clothe and accessorize the modern mature bohemienne, and to that end I focus on natural materials: wool, silk, cotton, linen. I find my recycled fabric at my local thrift shop. For my felt, I buy a lot of sheep fleeces at local sheep and wool festivals and clean them myself.

I love the malleability of wool -- like a lightweight version of clay. Felt can be thin, flat and supple or sculptural and three-dimensional. Wool takes color marvelously. My felts favor the use of sheep breeds that produce coarse wool, such as Jacob, Icelandic, and Shetland, because they create felts with rustic, nubbly, almost feral textures. This textured felt is embodied in a set of crossbody bags currently featured in my Etsy shop.
