Gill Bustamante is a professional artist based in East Sussex who creates large semi-abstract landscape, seascape and wildlife paintings in oil on canvas. Her painting style is very distinct and often fuses art-nouveau, impressionist and semi-abstract techniques with traditional portraiture that reflect her love of nature, animals, birds and the flora and fauna of the landscapes around her. She loves the ancient landscapes of England and her paintings often reflect the magical elements that such landscapes have. Gill’s main working method has been the development of a painting style she terms ‘memory impressionism’. This method involves going walking somewhere, looking at and absorbing the things she sees and experiences, and then returning home to her studio to try and capture an echo or essence of the place from memory - including any wildlife she may have seen. By this method, she captures precise moments in times at different seasons and the feeling she has about them. Gill completed a fine art degree in Brighton in 1983 and has painted since she was three. In her own words: “Painting always makes me happy along with cake, bunnies, driving erratically, BBC 6 music and totally irreverent comedy”.

I am completely in love with this painting! It looks just as good as I imagined from the photos, and I really like the little details that can be found when looking closely. Even though I put some details in wrong when ordering, shipping was fairly fast and went smoothly. Also Gill was very kind and helpful throughout the whole process. Gill Bustamante Sussex Artist

I am an artist based in Sussex and I paint large contemporary landscapes, seascapes, animal and bird paintings in oil on canvas.
My painting style has elements of abstract, impressionist, expressionist, art-nouveau and something possibly unique to me but which I have not worked out yet.
The aim I have when painting is to create art that hints at better times and places. I dream that one day I may paint a masterpiece that is so perfect I could disappear into it.
I have a fine art degree in sculpture (acquired at Brighton in 1983) but am largely self-taught as a painter. For many year’s I painted animal portraits but finally realised I was having to repress my urge to experiment a bit too much and people did not seem to appreciate their Labrador being visually experimented with. So in 2012, I stopped painting commissions altogether and set myself free to try new techniques and painting styles and on large canvases so that I would have more room to play. I also took up walking in the country and painting from memory. This allows my impressions of a place to come out on the canvas in strange and interesting beautiful or disastrous ways.
I may never be rich or famous but that was never my goal. I want the world to be beautiful and people to be happier. Art makes that happen – in all its forms.
