My childhood life was always surrounded by seamstresses, pattern makers and needlework ladies. The house that I lived was filled with fabrics, laces, yarns, buttons and paper patterns. When I was young, my mom was in a dressmaking business. My house was always busy with a circle of creative women doing the humble art of sewing, drawing, pattern making, knitting and all kinds of needlework. I learnt the basic sewing skills, pattern making skills and the needlework from those ladies. Seeing my mom got engaged in her work really excites me. I loved the whole process of creating something out of a piece of fabric and turned it into a beautiful dress that would make a woman smiles when she wears it. Where there are needlework, there is art and there are memories and stories to be shared.
Now, being a wife and a stay home mother of two young boys, I have left those passion behind me years ago. Until one day I met an old friend of mine who inspired me by saying that “being a stay home mom or a homemaker does not mean that you need to put your dreams and aspirations on hold until they are grown up”. Stay home mom & a home-based dressmaking business seem to go hand in hand. I was immediately inspired, thrilled and excited of this possibility.
Here I am now collaborating with my friend. We hired two skilled and experienced seamstresses to help us. I take the role of coming up with the designs, fabrics and accessories. I do a lot of internet browsing and flipping through magazines. After I gather a bunch of inspirational photos, color schemes and ideas, I will sketch out my ideas to make them a reality. My talented friend will then turn my ideas into sewing patterns on paper. She will continue with the fabric cutting process and next our seamstresses will skilfully transform those little fabric pieces into one beautiful dress. I also play the role of the model in the photos. My husband, who supports my business wholeheartedly, helps to take picture of me wearing our creation dresses. Through the whole process, each one of us bring different aesthetics to the table.
Let’s talk about fashion & style. I love modest, not-too-revealing and yet modern maxi dresses. I am always inspired by the Abaya style maxi dresses. I consider my style to be an ever-evolving mix of classic feminine and modern trends. Being modest yet fashionable is the key inspiration in all of my creations. In this journey, I have discovered creativity inside of me that I did not know existed.
Each piece of my collection tells a story about a group of creative women, fulfilling their inner art passion and pursuing their dreams. We are preserving the dignity of women/wives/mothers; opening up possibilities to be self-determining and self-sufficient. We are the fashion craftswomen, the fashion artisans. There is such healing power in the making of art and especially in the art of sewing and needlework. We are determined to live everyday with passion and to create beauty that brings happiness and satisfaction to ourselves and the ones around us.
