Every occasion is special n should be celebrated with lots of glitter n a dash of whimsy!!!
When I was a child I use to sit for hours near my mom as she designed and made clothing on her old sewing machine in Russia. I remember asking her as a 4 year old how I can sew a button on or make a new skirt for my dolly. She taught me everything I know then and now. Those were fond memories for me!
Growing up I was that weird quiet kid that was extremely shy but some how managed to always color inside the lines, and organize my desk by color coding everything. (If you ask anyone today about me, lol they will not describe me that way). As I grew older, I struggled to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I enjoyed many things and was good at many things but I couldn't find something that made me completely happy in my career path as an Interior Designer. In the back of my head I kinda always knew I would end up running my own business eventually. It took many years of several job changes, getting married, and having my hubs giving me a large shove into the deep end to wake me up! It was time to take that creativity I had and all those years of schooling and put them into good use!
I had previously opened my Etsy shop in 2011. At that time I put up a few items and got disappointed quickly when they didn't sell, not doing enough research on how to properly be a successful seller. Working 2 jobs was not helping the situation or my creativity either. I had to take a different route. I knew that if I was comfortable and had something to lean on financially (like a job) I would never really dive in and get things done.
In May of 2013 my amazing husband sat me down and told me that I would never be happy until I start being selfish. He told me to quit my job and focus on myself. His sacrifice for me and us was the best gift he has ever given me! It took me several months of soul searching as well as investigating what route I wanted to take. Finally I just started to make things! Accent pillows, stockings, felt flowers, different types of garland. I fell in love with make things with my own hands again. It wasn't just making things, it was the whole design process! I would sketch for hours, shop for supplies and then come home and work till 2 a.m. making a sample. I started reading everything about how to be successful on Etsy and then I just started doing it! I would take photos all day until I was happy with results. It wasn't pretty at first but slowly I learned my way around. I loved every minute of it. I heard my first cha-ching a day later when I sold my first stocking. The joy I had over that sale! Oh my!!! :)
The Decor Room was born! I was working out of my 700sqft apartment, using my little dining room as a sewing station and my living room for everything else. Hence the name, "The Decor Room". There has been lots of hard work, sweat and tears but mostly a lot of joy and lots of love and glitter. Every product is made by me in my little shop. I'm now in a new studio working out of our first house. I can slowly see the growth and I'm very grateful to my hubby, family, and friends (especially the ones here on Etsy) for standing by me and cheering me on!
So if you have a special occasion coming up in your life, stop by and get a bit of glitter and a dash of whimsy from The Decor Room!!!
Cheers,
Lily
