The Educated Birth exists to equip parents for well-informed and empowering birth by equipping birth educators and doulas with high-quality, easy to learn from, visually engaging birth education materials. JOIN EMAIL LIST:

When I became a birth doula in April 2016, I quickly realized how difficult it was to find high-quality, visually engaging birth education materials. Books were plentiful, documentaries were stacking up, but brief, simple, easy to digest educational materials? These were few and far between. And people of color? Unsurprisingly and disappointingly underrepresented.

So I started making some infographics in my free time. I reviewed my favorite reputable books and websites and began to simplify information about birth into educational infographics that also recognized people and babies of color, like myself and so many of my family members and friends.

In January 2017, at the encouragement of a few doulas in my area, I threw my growing collection of infographics into an unnamed Etsy shop and shared it with a doula group online. The abundant and immediate response astonished me!

The support and feedback I received from the birth community filled my heart and opened my eyes. There was and there still is so much more work to be done to create inclusive, welcoming, supportive spaces for pregnant folks across race, gender, sexual orientation, language and more.

And that leads me to where we are today, working to grow this into both a better service and a more beautiful community.

The Educated Birth exists as a branch of my doula and design work through Cheyenne Varner, LLC. I hopes to continue to add to the collection over time, equipping more birth educators and doulas with beautiful materials that do the work of preparing expecting parents for well-informed, empowering birth.

Frequently asked questions
I don't see my digital download! Help!

After purchasing a digital file, you’ll see a View your files link which goes to the Downloads page. Here, you can download all the files associated with your order.

Downloads are available once your payment is confirmed. If you paid with PayPal or a credit card on Etsy, confirmation might take a few minutes.

We’ll also send you a download notification email separate from any transaction notification emails you receive from Etsy and/or PayPal.

If you're unsure if you've purchased a Digital Item, you can always go back to the listing page. If it is a digital download, you should see an "Instant Download" message on the images for the item.

Please note that you can't download a digital purchase through the Etsy app at this time.

I didn't get a digital download email! Help!

First, check your spam or junk inbox. If you use Gmail, also check your Social and Promotions tabs. If it’s not there, add transaction (at) to your address book or safe list.

For now, you can still get to your file using the directions below:

Go to You > Purchases and reviews and look for the order.

To the right of the order, click Download Files. This goes to the Downloads page for all the files attached to your order.

There are generally no limits for when or how many times you can download a file. In most cases you can access a file any time on your Purchases page, provided the transaction hasn't been canceled or removed.

What are Standard and Extended Licenses?

THE STANDARD LICENSE gives permission for ONE individual to use the items purchased on ONE commercial project (ex. use with an unlimited amount of doula clients OR use with an unlimited amount of doulas in training courses).

THE EXTENDED LICENSE gives permission for ONE individual to use the items purchased on MULTIPLE commercial projects (ex. use with an unlimited amount of doula clients AND use with an unlimited amount of doulas in training courses).

In essence, the Extended License is a distinction between the use of The Educated Birth's graphics with its intended commercial audience (parents preparing for birth) and an additional commercial audience (other birth workers).

If I supply this product to another individual through an Extended License do they still need to purchase a license of their own?

Yes. The Extended License allows you provide other birth workers with the Item(s) you have purchased through the training / program you held. It does not allow those individuals however, permission to use the Item(s) commercially for their own clients or own projects.

Does the Extended License allow me to use Item(s) I purchased in a product I have created to sell (ex. manual)?

No. The Extended License does not allow you to place Item(s) you have purchased in a new product you are offering for sale.

Ex. You MAY NOT create a training manual composed of purchased Item(s) and sell that manual to participants in a training course. You MAY provide participants with Item(s) as a resource as a part of a paid training course.

If you are interested in having illustrations similar to the ones in The Educated Birth in a product of your own, you may request custom illustrations by sending me a message on Etsy or emailing me at

Is there a difference between the Standard and Extended License versions of an infographic?

No. There is no difference in content. The only difference is in the terms of usage.

I purchased The Educated Birth infographic(s) before Extended Licenses were offered. Do I need to upgrade?

Any items purchased before Extended Licenses were offered are considered Standard License items.

If your usage fits the Extended License, then yes, you should upgrade. Unfortunately at this time, Etsy doesn't offer me an option to "upgrade" your item, so you'll have to outright purchase the Extended License version for those terms to apply to your use.

Feel free to connect with me at if you have any questions or concerns about this process.

I and/or my organization cannot afford to purchase [X]. Do you offer discounts?

The accessibility of these resources is really important to me. If cost is an issue for you and/or your organization please feel free to reach out to me directly at

Tell me a little bit about you and/or your group and the products you're interested in and what cost would be manageable for you. I offer "let's-make-it-work" discounts on case-by-case basis.
