UK Teacher, Cyclist & Designer in Japan Creating Map Art Inspired by Places, Routes & Memories
🏆 Three map artworks selected as finalists in the xTool × Creema Collaboration Contest 2026 and chosen for exhibition at HandMade In Japan Fes (HMJ) in Tokyo.
I am Mr Tim, a UK teacher, cyclist, and designer based in Japan.
Through The Magic Crayons, I create handcrafted map art inspired by places, routes, and memories. My work includes city maps, marathon course maps, cycling route artwork, train route maps, and custom location pieces designed to celebrate meaningful journeys and personal achievements.
The inspiration for my work comes from exploring Japan by bicycle. Many of the places featured in my artwork are locations I have visited and photographed during rides across the country. Those experiences inspired me to transform real map data into decorative art that captures the character of a place and the memories connected to it.
Each artwork is individually designed and created in Japan using precision laser cutting and carefully selected materials. I work with both natural wood and professional illustration board to create layered pieces with depth, detail, and a distinctive visual style.
Many of my maps are commissioned as gifts for marathon runners, cyclists, travellers, homeowners, and families celebrating milestones, achievements, and special places.
Custom commissions are always welcome. Whether it is a favourite city, a marathon finish, a cycling adventure, a train route, or a meaningful location, I would be delighted to create a piece just for you.
Thank you for visiting my shop.
