These are so light you forget that you’re wearing them. I love the gem choice with the metal—they go great together and compliment my necklace perfectly. (Another The Navigatrix design.) they are exactly as pictured and will go with any outfit.

Such a great creation! I’ve been at work go just a bit but everyone who has spotted this is captivated by it—quite honestly we’ve never seen anything like it. Such a great design and the perfect piece for an otherwise bland top. Speedy shipping & excellent packaging as well—such a perfect piece.

I was excited to get this only to be so disappointed when the very first time I went to put it on, the clasp broke off.

About

My brother turned to me and said "Why not make your own shop?"

Have you ever looked back on your life only to realise that the hodge-podge journey you took actually blends together in a seamless flow of interconnectedness? Do you recognise how each experience built the foundations for the next? If you have and do, like The Navigatrix, you are then better prepared to envision your future course...

I have been inspired by my brother and a friend to find out more about Steampunk. Having been a Live Roleplayer since college, I loved the idea of the genre and as I learned more about it, the idea for a character came to mind and I decided to put together a costume.

I scoured the internet for the clothing but decided to make my own hairclip and gloves to go with it. This was the first time I had created a character without the guidance of a LRP rulebook! I was quite pleased with the effect of the hairclip, made entirely from re-used materials I had to hand. Having recently moved back to my native Lincolnshire I was setting up my Reiki practice once more and being a stay at home mum, funds were short.

So when the thought that people might like to buy these pretty clips popped into my head, I immediately asked my brother if I could perhaps have a little space in his shop (I knew nothing about Etsy at the time). He just turned to me and said: "Why not make your own shop?"

That idea opened the door to my creative 'makey' streak that I had so long ago abandoned to disillusionment. When my modelmaking career landed me in positions where I was mostly translating 2D plans into 3D models (mostly architectural), my dream of working in film and television evaporated. I had been inspired by such films as The Dark Crystal, Star Wars and The Neverending Story, growing up, so it was no wonder that I took to Live Roleplaying. I could make my own costumes, overcome years of shyness (honestly, it was like Art therapy!) and explore who I am.

Today, I have a keen interest in personal development as my journey took me from modelmaking to retrain as a Montessori Directress, working with 2-6 year olds. Simultaneously, I had a few Reiki sessions to relieve stress and ended up learning to treat myself and others.

Life has been very bumpy over the past few years but I come from a very resourceful, creative family, full of 'knit-wits' and 'sew and sews' as my Granny used to joke. I have found the courage to see myself for who I am and to be happy being me.

My Etsy shop is more than just an opportunity for me to express my creative urges, to make and sell jewellery and accessories. It is a point of consciousness, a place where I can both express my truth and have others offer my own reflection back to me, allowing me to correct my course if necessary. It is an opportunity to give and a lesson to be ever more grateful. It's a place I can share my story with those who genuinely choose to listen.

If you've read this far, you are one of those and I thank you. Perhaps you would like to treat yourself to one of my attractive creations?

Most of my materials are sourced from local charity shops (Goodwill stores ;). 'Upcycle' is a word I learned here! At a recent trade fair, people gave a very positive reaction upon hearing how items that I bought in charity shops were disassembled and the pieces re-used in new designs.

I usually prefer to use local craft suppliers for the few new elements. Other materials are either remnants, vintage bits found in the bottom of family member's sewing boxes or gifts of second-hand unwanted jewellery from neighbours and others. This has benefitted me by limiting materials but encouraging creativity, inspired me to never make anything the same twice (even most of my earrings are asymmetrical! ) and in sourcing materials locally but selling globally I feel that I have created a healthy, sustainable business model. Not at all the kind of 'model' I'm used to making!

Through the commendable support of the folks here at Etsy and the wonderful people I've met and befriended through the teams, I feel that I have found my next greatest vision of my life materialising.

My Aether Nomad Range has given rise to an international, co-creative art project. You can find out more by visiting The Aether Nomads Project on Facebook or using #ANProject on Twitter (and various other social media networks).

In pieces where I have commissioned or bought elements from Matt or other Etsy sellers, I will include a link to their shops.
My sincere gratitude to each and every individual who contributes to The Navigatrix, encouraging my happiness, health and various kinds of wealth. I wish the same for you: here's to your Happiness, Health and all kinds of Wealth,

With love,
Sally-Ann
