Handmade, Nature-Inspired, One-of-a-Kind Art
At the age of 12, I taught myself to make jewelry. I had grown up watching both my grandmother and my mother create art of all forms, so it was only natural to want to join in on the fun. More than a way to earn money, it taught me to turn my ideas into something I could share. I began joining my mother at her craft shows, and before long I knew crafting would forever be in my life. Since then, I’ve sought to grow my passion.
I started The Poetic Statements during the summer of 2020, right after completing my Master in Creative Writing/Poetry. At the time, I simply hoped to revive my creative muscles—I had no idea my hobby would turn into a business that sustains my happiness for making new things. Fifteen years of making later, and still I can’t seem to stop my hands from this delightful work.
In all that I have accomplished as a small business owner, I am proudest to see how I have pushed myself to make bolder statement pieces over time. Compared to the simpler looks I first produced, my recent work reflects my drive to make art unlike anything seen before. In terms of detail, style, and quality, my standards are always being raised. I particularly love learning new techniques and playing with different mediums.
Each time I devote myself to making accessories or painting a picture, I strive for the end result to surprise me. How so? I believe the best art is that which is allowed to be what it wants, despite what plans had been made. This, of course, is the element of magic.
What inspires me most is nature itself. I often take walks before sitting down to craft, reminiscing on what beauty struck me during my wandering. I am moved by views, creatures, delicate plants persisting against all odds; from the sky to the forests and rivers to the pause of a hummingbird overhead, I hope to translate such witnessed wonders that bring me joy. This world is our greatest shared gift, and so I work to honor it.
