Plate is brilliant, and the effort Sarah and Simon went to finding us the right plate to go with the design was amazing. Thanks so much.
reworked vintage for you and your home
as a child i was a bit of a magpie. it might have come from my make do and mend rural upbringing. when something broke a search of the house would reveal how to mend it. this gave rise to unique and unusual solutions, plaster patched with paper mache, coat hanger curtain poles and broken fridges kept on as unsual cupboards. my dad still has a defunct fridge from my childhood that he uses as a cupboard... waste not, want not.
my sister and i made up our own little museum in our room. bits of glass and ceramics dug up from the garden, long unread books pilfered from our parents’ book shelves and out of favour fancy china ornaments from our grandparents. the first time my sister and i were allowed to pack our own holiday cases (i was about eight, she twelve) my parents were disappointed to discover that instead of clean pants and socks we had brought our collection with us. we weren’t disappointed; our little room near the sea looked lovely and familiar with our collection covering every available surface. these old things all had their own stories, they had once been precious to someone and now, unloved by them, they were precious to us.
as life went on i forgot about these old things and their old stories. my job in media, design and advertising focussed me on creating new and shiny things with new and shiny stories. my treasure junk was relegated to a trunk. it wasn’t until i bought my first home and joined the nesting culture that i had space for my trunk, i opened it up and let the treasure tell its story again. after spending what seemed like a fortune on buying a flat i was loathe to spend more making it a home. i became a magpie again and every family clear out, stumbled across junk shop or boot sale was a moment of excited discovery, something else for my nest. i became less and less interested in the new and shiny things offered by my job and when the opportunity came up to move from london down to cornwall, with my then boyfriend, now husband, i went for it.
when we first moved in we had a mattress in front of the log burner and that was pretty much it. with this extra space my ‘collectomania’ became a necessity and before we knew it we had a house full of dishevelled furniture and cupboards stuffed with random stuff. my main weakness was odds and ends of vintage china. each mismatched piece with its own tale to tell, a story over a cuppa, a remembered dinner. when there was no more room for my ever growing collection and the possibility of having to stop finding became a probability i knew i had to find a use for my stash. after many sadly broken tea cups (stored for reinvention at a later date) and more than quirky wall art plates (that are hung for my eyes only) i came up with a range of hand customised vintage china. in 2009 i started selling it to family and friends, at craft fairs and then online. people seemed to love them and requests from america, orders from european shops and commissions from pubs and restaurants came in.
over the next few years i kept collecting and creating and in late 2012 launched my extended range under the name of The Rework House. The Rework House takes one man's junk and reworks it in to another man's treasure. surplus stuff becomes unique light fittings, tatty vintage pieces are reinvented as wonderful wall decor, unloved bits and bobs are salvaged as quirky home decor and discarded things are reinvented as unusual furniture. surplus, tatty, unloved and discarded junk finds a home with The Rework House.
