In the late 60's and early 70's my Grandpa had a farm in Arkansas. Chickens, hogs and a few cattle. He had been a farmer, a Carnie, a timber man, a refinery foreman and now a farmer again. Somewhere on the back 40 (ok, the back 30) there was a walnut tree grove. They were already old trees when he bought the property, and as it happened one of the bigger trees died. Grandpa sold most of the tree to a logger but kept a 4 foot section for himself. The plan was to make gun stocks. Life got in the way and the log ended up in my mom's garage. My brother and I were forbidden from using the wood, no fort construction, no bonfires. When I started woodturning I asked mom about that old log sitting in her garage, it promptly ended up in the back of my truck with her blessing. Dad was incredibly happy too! As I got serious about turning it became time to think of a business name. It was then that I stumbled across The Walnut Log. No, seriously, I stumbled over it as it sat in my garage.
