Creating simply beautiful adornments for fun-loving, adventurous people with exquisite taste.
Everyone's heard the phrase, "less is more." It's the concept that simplicity can exceed expectations in unexpected ways. Simple elegance conveys a sense of timeless sophistication without pretense. Minimalist design enhances naturally occurring beauty, rather than attempting to create new beauty. It is my goal to strike a balance between form and function without excess and fostering an adventurous spirit in the process.
I've always been the girl who didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up—and I'm still that girl. I mean, there are so many options to choose from, how could I pick just one? The one thing I did know is that I like to learn new things and I love making things.
After years of working day jobs that pay the bills but don't generate a tangible product or require much creativity, I started making jewelry for myself to help stimulate the creative parts of my brain. Friends started asking me to make pieces for them and encouraged me to sell my work. It took a while before I had the courage to put myself out there, but I was spurred on by the increasing need to "make." After several family members' lives were unexpectedly cut short, I decided there is no time like right now to start living creatively.
My husband and I formed Originovel, LLC as a way to channel our creative ideas into something more than just dreams. Things Uncommon was born from that as a creative outlet for tangible creative products.
I'm inspired by my incredible friends and family to make wearable items that feed the soul and mean something to the person wearing them. My husband is an adventure seeker, and he is a big source of my inspiration as he pushes himself past mental and physical boundaries to experience a full and spectacular life. Travel, adventure, family, nature, and fun are some of my most influential themes in life and in my products.
I enjoy using materials that are both beautiful and practical for active people while also being eco-friendly and sustainable. I am hard on jewelry, myself, so I know I won't wear it if it will interfere with how I go about my day. That's why I only use the best ingredients, and I strive to create designs that can endure active and adventurous lifestyles while also embodying a simple beauty. At the same time, I realize that all of the lovely goodies that the earth provides sometimes come at a cost that goes beyond dollars and cents. Many precious and semi-precious metals and stones are mined in ways that are harmful to the planet and to the people who mine them. I strive to choose materials that strike a balance between beauty and responsibility.
All of my items are handmade by me in my smoke-free home studio in North Carolina. I love learning new techniques and trying out new materials, so the scope of this shop will probably evolve over time, and I look forward to seeing what it will look like in a few years.
