Taking care of your natural dyed garment
Natural dyed garments are consciously made with botanical ingredients. Due to the nature of the dye, to improve the longevity of the color please wash the garment in cold water with a mild detergent, a ph neutral soap is the best. Air dry for best results.
Many natural dyes are ph sensitive, meaning when exposed to certain substances or liquids that are particularly acidic or basic, the color will shift quite significantly. Please be mindful when you are around substances with lemons, citrus foods, vinegar, or any other acidic food. Accidental spills may cause bleaching of the color.
Will the color from natural dyed garment wash out?
No, the color should not wash out. During the natural dyeing process, the fabric is pre treated through scouring and mordanting. These two steps are integral for the natural dye to adhere.
Scouring: is a deep clean of the fabric before it gets mordanted, Ph neutral soap and washing soda are used to remove any pectins, waxes, and additives that the fabric may contain. This steps allows for the mordant and dye to penetrate the fibers.
Mordanting: is a chemical process that helps bind the dye to the fabric. For this process alum is dissolved in water where the fabric will then soak for a few hours.
Please note, the color will not wash out, but will change over the lifetime garment. I like to call these dyes “lived in color”
Why natural dyes?
Natural dyes have been used for thousands are years before the conception of synthetic dyes. Natural dyes provide a more sustainable and eco-friendly way of creating beautiful color without causing harm to the environment. Most synthetic dyes are not biodegradable; they accumulate on lands and in rivers, causing ecological problems.
As a textile artisit, I enjoy utilizing what the earth has to offer. It helps ground me to nature and gives me a new perspective on art and creation. The process of natural dyeing is extensive but also therapeutic and calming. I love the unpredictability of natural dyes and how each product comes out different and beautiful.
