Classic & Contemporary Artwork that Charms and Cheers
My parents filled their home - and their children's minds - with artwork. Whether it was on our walls or in our books, they never missed an opportunity to introduce us to beauty and educate us about its origins. A Picasso reproduction hung side by side with my grandfather's photographs, framed Cassatt postcards were paired with a modest and miniature still life by our great Aunt Margaret and a Thomas Hart Benton lithograph hung adjacent to my mother's seascape. All were equally treasured. We were encouraged to flip through Janson's History of Art - one of our most-prized possessions - or to refer to our Encyclopedia to learn more about artists and artistic movements that were referenced during dinner conversations. We all looked forward to pilgrimages to the St. Louis Art Museum and were gobsmacked to discover the very same Monets, Matisses and Gaugins in Janson were waiting for us there.
While our fabulous internet age allows us to practically tour the masterpieces of the Louvre, the Prado or the Whitney from the comfort of our homes, nothing compares to experiencing the light, the textures, the colors and even the very soul of a handmade painting in the flesh. Unfortunately, we can't all own Pissarros and Pollocks. Still, we all need more handmade artwork on our walls, pieces that charm and cheer us, pieces that add beauty and elegance, pieces that spark conversation among friends. There's such pleasure in starting a life-long conversation with a piece of art that you can call your own - memorizing the colors, hypothesizing about its origins, moving it from room to room or house to house, always finding new joy with its continued company. These pieces become heirlooms for grandchildren, children, nieces and nephews to experience throughout their young lives and revisit as adults.
I hope you find the same pleasure in starting a conversation with one of my paintings. They're influenced by classic colors and styles but produced for a contemporary audience in a modern way. They are pieces designed to bring beauty and elegance into every space, whether it be an informal children's nursery or a formal dining room. Most importantly, I hope they bring charm and cheer wherever they go.
