About TinyErica

On Etsy since 2011

Tiny Erica Jewelry empowers creativity and self expression within the wearer.

Hello, and welcome to Tiny Erica Jewelry. Each piece of jewelry you see in my collection is carefully and lovingly designed on paper, crafted by hand, and made to last utilizing high quality and ethically sourced sterling silver, gold, and gemstones. Find and express your unique creativity with your favorite pieces from the line!

T H E W O R K.

From a gratifying process of play and exploration, the earliest iteration of Tiny Erica Jewelry was first born in 2012 as a playful examination of various aesthetics and design principles that were of great interest to me after obtaining my BFA in college in 2009. Over time the collection metamorphosed into something refined and playful, combining sleek clean lines with just the right amount of rough-and-tumbled texture to create a collection of jewelry that is minimal, durable, versatile, and incredibly expressive and fun to wear.

The design principles utilized in my work are informed by my educational background in graphic design as well as my current surroundings and experiences. Shapes and textures found in nature are often recontexualized and reduced to simple linear patterns and lightweight architectural structures that first find their way into sketchbooks and onto scraps of paper, and finally become small scale wearable sculptures and heirloom-quality pieces of jewelry.

I do my best to ensure that the work is created using best practices, ethically sourcing and recycling as much material as possible. I often melt down my scraps of silver and gold to reuse them, and my tools, stones, and any additional materials are sourced from fair and sustainable companies that I trust.

T H E A R T I S T.

For me personally, metalsmithing has always been an incredibly gratifying process of play and exploration: the ideas that strike at a moment's notice (or after many long hours of brainstorming), the numerous sketches made to work out the logistics of successfully constructing a piece, carefully choosing materials that work best with each design, and finally working with my own two hands to see to it that my ideas come to fruition -- forging, soldering, shaping, filing, sanding, polishing, and stone setting. It's challenging and cathartic, and with each new piece of jewelry that I create I learn something new about both the process and myself.

After obtaining my BFA in 2009 with dual degrees in graphic design and metalsmithing I completely immersed myself in the world of bench jewelry and goldsmithing. First, I worked for several years as the bench jeweler of an independently owned jewelry store in my hometown of Erie, PA, and later as a metalsmith for a company in my current city, Cleveland, OH. It has always been a dream of mine to become an independent business owner who designs and hand makes her own collection of work, so in August 2016 I made the decision to dedicate myself fully to Tiny Erica Jewelry, and while it feels as though I've only just begun, this journey has proven to be an incredibly fruitful experience so far.

In addition to hand fabricating my own production line, I love collaborating with clients and customers to create beautiful one-of-a-kind heirlooms that will be loved and cherished for generations to come, and as of Fall 2018 a one of a kind wedding jewelry line as unique and lovely as the couples who choose Tiny Erica Jewelry is officially underway, so stay tuned... I cannot wait to share what I've been up to with you.

So thank you for visiting the shop today. Please keep in touch, as I would love to work with you.

Please carefully read listing descriptions before making a purchase, as they include detailed measurements and additional information about each piece of jewelry in the shop, including production times. I also strongly recommend knowing your ring size before completing a ring purchase. If you are unsure of your ring size, my best recommendation is popping over to a local jewelry store, as most establishments will size you for free! This is the most accurate and reliable way to determine your ring size and ensure a proper fit. Alternatively, I now offer adjustable plastic sizers in my shop (Follow this link to view the listing and purchase a plastic ring sizer: https://www.etsy.com/listing/554801227/reusable-plastic-finger-sizing-gauge-for?ref=shop_home_active_1).

If you need any assistance or have questions regarding pieces in the shop, personalizations, customizations, or even your very own one of a kind custom piece designed just for you, feel free to reach out! I'd love to collaborate with you!

INFO ABOUT MY PRODUCTION PROCESS & METALS I USE:

Tiny Erica Jewelry is a a company of one, and I personally hand make every piece you see in my jewelry line using only solid sterling silver, solid 14k gold, or both in the case of two-toned pieces! Nothing is ever plated, and everything is nickel-free (the one exception being custom pieces made in white gold). I also recycle my scrap metal by melting it into ingots that I then hand-forge to create the free-form organic pieces in the line (geo stacking rings, geo stud earrings, etc).

Prefabricated components and findings such as earring backs and chain clasps are also either solid sterling silver or solid 14k gold, unless otherwise mentioned (lapel pins and broaches typically include stainless steel butterfly clutches, for instance, and I always note this in product descriptions if this is ever the case).

- Upon request, rubber earring backs are available for free with any sterling silver earring purchase in my shop. Please let me know if you'd like a pair, and I'm happy to include them in your order.
- All 14k gold earring purchases automatically include a set of rubber earring backs in addition to the 14k earring backs.

▪️MORE INFO ABOUT CUSTOM ORDERS:
Custom orders (pieces designed specifically for you) are non-returnable and non-refundable due to their specific and personalized nature. They generally take a MINIMUM of 4 weeks to build. Each custom made piece is carefully hand crafted with you in mind, and depending on the complexity of a design and the materials being sourced, it often requires more time to complete than a typical made-to-order item.
_______________________________________________________
▪️CUSTOM WORK TURN AROUND TIMES AND PROCESSES:
Each piece typically begins with a consultation in which we'll sit down either physically or virtually to discuss your inspirations, the occasion, the recipient, your preferred materials, any need by dates, and your budget. From there I'll take to the drawing board and sketch design ideas (a truly collaborative process that typically takes anywhere from 1-3 weeks), and once we narrow in on a final design and agree upon a payment plan (a non-refundable down payment is necessary to cover the cost of materials), I'll source any necessary materials (which takes anywhere from 2-3 weeks) and build out the piece (1-2 weeks production time). Once the piece is completed and paid for in full, arrangements will be made for either a pick up if you're local or a shipment if you are not based in the Cleveland, Ohio area!

▪️COSTS FOR CUSTOM WORK:
▫️Sterling silver pieces are assessed and accepted on a case-by-case basis and typically begin at $200.
▫️Gold pieces easily begin at $475 and can quickly work their way up from there.
▫️For every rule there is an exception, so if you have an idea for a custom piece reach out and I'm happy to provide more insight into costs for you!

If you are interested in one-of-a-kind custom work, please reach out! I'd love to work with you.

Frequently asked questions
Gift Wrapping and Packaging:

If you wish to have an item gift wrapped or would like to include a special handwritten note inside the packaging of an item please let me know in the "Notes" section at check out and I am happy to oblige! There is no additional charge for gift wrapping.

Jewelry Cleaning Tips and Pointers:

Most precious metals, especially sterling silver, will tarnish with time. It's commonly caused by moisture in the air & even the pH level of your skin — this is normal and is the nature of the material — but by handling your jewelry with care and following best practices, you can prolong the life and finish of your pieces.

BE MINDFUL that commercial jewelry cleaners WILL remove antique & darkened finishes from pieces and can be too harsh for use on softer stones like pearls and opals, so proceed with extreme caution.

I recommend using polishing cloths specially made for jewelry for general upkeep of your pieces. For a deeper clean that removes both tarnish & buildup from lotions and perfumes, see my DIY jewelry cleaner "recipe" below!

DIY Jewelry Cleaner Using Common Household Items:

This method is not intended for use on softer stones like pearls & opals, but is safe to use on most harder stones like garnets, sapphires, rubies, etc, & is completely safe for sterling & gold!

In a small dish make a paste out of water, baking soda, & liquid dish soap. Dip a soft bristled toothbrush into the paste, then gently scrub your jewelry. Rinse with water & repeat as needed, then dry your piece thoroughly with a soft towel to prevent future tarnish.

Warm white vinegar also works well to remove particularly finicky tarnish from sterling silver, especially. Gently warm a small amount of white vinegar in a microwave safe cup, then dip your jewelry & scrub with a toothbrush. Repeat as needed. Rinse with water & thoroughly pat dry!

Tips For Tarnish Prevention:

Tarnish is caused by moisture.
- Avoid storing jewelry in the open air, especially in humid climates such as in the bathroom or on the kitchen sink.
- Store jewelry in an airtight container when not being worn.
- Perspiration, perfume, & lotion can cause tarnish & buildup, so keep skin & jewelry clean & dry. Remove jewelry before using lotion & perfume, & make sure skin is dry before putting your jewelry back on. This helps prevent buildup on your pieces & maintains their shine & luster.
- Avoid the use of chemicals while wearing your pieces. This includes chlorinated pool water & harsh household chemical cleaners. These things may be damaging to the metal but are confirmed harmful to soft stones like opals and pearls, AND leather & wood.

My Favorite Tip For Preventing Tarnish:

Keep the silica desiccant packets you often find in newly purchased handbags, wallets, or shoes, as they are used to absorb moisture in the air. Throw a few into your jewelry box to reduce tarnish when your jewelry is not in use! This won't prevent tarnish forever but I've found that it significantly slows the process.

What Is the Process of Placing a Custom Order?

Custom pieces are non-returnable & non-refundable due to their specific & personalized nature.
The process usually begins with a physical or virtual consultation to discuss your inspirations, the occasion, the recipient, your preferred materials, any need-by dates, & your budget. From there I'll sketch ideas (a collaborative process that takes 1-3 weeks) and once a final design is chosen we'll arrange a payment plan. At this point a non-refundable down payment is required to begin the build. Next, I'll source materials (2-3 weeks) & build out the piece (approx 2 weeks). Once the item is finished & all payments are complete arrangements will be made for a pick up if you're local or a shipment if you're not based in the Cleveland, Ohio area!

Custom Order Pricing:

Custom sterling silver pieces are assessed and accepted on a case-by-case basis and typically begin at $200+.

Custom solid gold pieces can begin as low as $475 and can quickly and easily work their way up from there.

These numbers are general ballparks, and for every rule there is an exception, so if you have an idea for a custom piece please reach out and I’m happy to provide more detailed insight into pricing for your design idea.

Additionally, we can also arrange a comfortable payment plan that will work with your budget!

What materials are used to make your jewelry?

Everything you see in my shop is hand crafted in solid sterling silver or solid 14k gold. Nothing is ever plated. Look to product descriptions to find specific and detailed information about each piece in the collection, such as precious metal type, type of stones, measurements, sizing, etc.

For folks with nickel sensitivities: sterling silver, yellow gold, and rose gold are generally nickel free. White gold does contain nickel.
