- Exploring Ancestry Through Weaving -
In June 2017, I embarked on a journey I had not planned, let alone packed for. I was unable to return to work and immediately had to slow down. Amidst the confusion, I found myself eager to create. I dreamt of textured hills and my fingers itched to create new shapes and sensations. The loom warps gave me the perfect balance between framework and flexibility.
As a young child, I was drawn to yarn. I spent hours watching my Ah-mah (grandma) cast on, bind off, or double crochet stitch her way under an entire blanket. Those hours spent with her most likely fueled my deep and unexplored curiosity of my mother's wicker basket of forgotten yarn. Something I would later come to realize was part of being an adult — yarn stuffed in a bag, left in the closet from that time you felt inspired to knit your own scarf. My first weaving was made entirely of that yarn.
My great-grandmother was also a weaver. My father remembers visiting her, as a child, in her countryside home in Taiwan. She would be seated on a low stool, splitting bamboo and weaving it into a large shallow basket; later to be used for sifting rice.
Tiny Moon Spells is my exploration of my family's matriarchs, their past livelihoods, and hobbies. If you happen to like what I've made, please help support me by making it yours!
