Pottery & ceramic sculptures by the late Leslie Hagen

Kapaa, Hawaii · 1818 Sales

Announcement   Leslie passed away unexpectedly in June 2018. It was her wish that her ceramics ended up in the hands & gardens of those who would enjoy them, rather than a thrift store, so her husband Leo and her friend Donia (both Etsy artists themselves) are keeping Leslie's shop open until all of her inventory is gone. Below is what Leslie had to say about her own work:

"My favorite thing is creating sculptures and ceramic wall masks. Especially if they cause a giggle. Whimsical, goofy, humorous, thought provoking, political satire on occasion and sometimes just bizarre, would be appropriate words to describe my work. In between sculptures and masks I hop on the wheel and get lost in a spinning world making yarn bowls, face mugs, vases, kitchen crocks, kitchen bowls, rice bowls, luminaries, sponge holders and functional art.
All the pieces in my shop have been hand sculpted, wheel thrown or a combination of both by me. All one of a kind.
They are bisque fired and then glazed fired to cone 6. All the functional pieces are food safe. They can also go in the oven, microwave or dishwasher with care."

About

Whimsical sculptures and functional pottery

My studio is in what use to be our garage. I thank my lucky stars every day to have such a great space to go crazy with clay.
It has a bathroom, a sink and a 220 plug for the kiln..all the essentials. There's even a room and a deck I use as a gallery.
Kauai has more tourists than the amount of people who live here. So I often just put a sign out on the road "Pottery Sale" and get to meet people from all over the world and sell my work.
So if you're ever visiting Kauai, stop by for a visit even if it's just to just talk story.
I started playing with clay in grade school, this continued on through out my life but I didn't get serious about three dimensional art until 2000. Before that I was just a muralist dabbling in sculpture.

Are you interested in the process? Mostly for the sculptures.......
First comes the idea, sometimes in the middle of the night. Occasionally this causes one to rush immediately to the studio in the night with very little on. Sculptor on steroids.....clay everywhere..after hours or more is when one steps back and decides to love or hate it. A day or so later when it's "leather " hard, it gets cleaned up...smoothed, carved, whatever needs correcting. Two to ten days later it is dry enough for it's first firing called a bisque firing. This firing takes about 13 hours and reaches a temperature of about 1888 degrees.
Takes about a day before the kiln can be opened after the first firing, then the bisque ware is removed, washed and the bottoms waxed.
After it's dry, it gets glazed, washed with iron oxide or whatever the plan is. This is the least favorite part of the process for most of us. Then back into the kiln for the glaze firing, this time at 2167 degrees for about 8 1/2 hours. Another day of waiting for it to cool enough to open. Ants in the pants till it's cool enough to open. Sometimes it's like Christmas, sometimes bad things have happened. You never know, that's the fun or the bummer of it.

Aloha and welcome. I'm so glad you stopped by . I hope these works of art have put a smile on your face or perhaps sparked some inspiration. I love the process of creating and am often amazed how a piece can take on a personality of it's own in the process, even if that wasn't the direction I had planned on. I love convo's and feedback. Feel free to contact me with questions or just to say hello. Shipping anywhere in Hawaii is much less expensive. Mahalo!
