Vaasal Designs was born from a love of kolam, a tradition I’ve grown up with and practiced for decades. I first learned simply by watching my mom create kolams at our veetu vaasal—the entrance to our home—especially during festivals and celebrations. Over time, I fell in love with the geometry, symmetry, and almost puzzle-like process of creating each design: making sure every line connects while still creating something beautiful.
The idea for Vaasal Designs came years later when a friend was searching for Indian-inspired artwork for her new home and couldn’t find pieces that felt simple, contemporary, and easy to live with. I realized I had been looking for the same thing. I wanted artwork that felt unmistakably rooted in South Indian tradition without feeling overly ornate or out of place in a modern home.
Every Vaasal piece is painted and drawn by hand, combining traditional kolam patterns with a modern, minimalist approach to color and composition. From earthy terracottas and greens to softer contemporary shades, each piece is designed to bring a little bit of tradition into everyday spaces.
The name Vaasal means “entrance” or “doorway” in Tamil—a fitting name for an art form I first came to love at the entrance of my own home. My hope is that these pieces help create that same feeling of warmth, welcome, and connection: rooted in tradition, made for modern spaces.
