ABOUT MY MATERIALS:
My platforms are made from Industrial grade Expanded polystyrene insulation (EPS). That means it's MUCH tougher than the stuff people find inside of a box when buying products at the store. It's also different from the pink foam (rigid board) also known as Extruded Polystyrene foam insulation (XPS) that people buy at home improvement centers.
There are honestly a lot of misconceptions around the word "styrofoam". I've even seen some information on Etsy that isn't quite correct so I need to probably clarify a bit better on my end to help out. I use the word "styrofoam" frankly for the keyword usage. Technically speaking it's a brand name from DuPont. Since the United States Patent and Trademark Office doesn't have it classified as unavailable for platform sales I go ahead and use it since that's what people are familiar with and usually say. The brand name "styrofoam" level of toughness that DuPont uses in their insulation board is the same toughness of what I use so I feel it's a pretty good description if people know what that means.
I am making efforts to move to a material called "GEOFOAM" which is free from dyes, formaldehyde, CFCs, and HCFCs. No greenhouse gases are utilized or emitted during the manufacturing process of EPS geofoam. It is manufactured using primarily steam, and the water from the manufacturing process is collected and reused. It can be manufactured using up to 10% of recycled materials and it is 100% recyclable.
