About

John Gutoskey Is Visually Hungry

John Gutoskey is an artist, designer, and collector. Early in his career, John worked as a costume designer and as a specialist in costume crafts. He worked on productions in New York City and across the US in theater, opera, dance, film, and television. He also taught graduate classes in millinery, mask making, and fabric dyeing at the University of Michigan in the Department of Theater. In the 1990‘s, John went back to school and became certified in various forms of therapeutic bodywork and meditation. At this same time, he returned to his studio with a new found interest in making art on his own terms, and it resulted in an outpouring of new work that continues to this day. Exploring the media of assemblage and found objects, he was inspired by the works of Joseph Cornell, Betye Saar, Lucas Samaras, outsider art, Art Brut, and religious art to evolve his own unmistakable style: a perfect mirror for his gregarious, highly animated personality. The obsessive collector in Gutoskey met the trained visual artist half-way. John earned his BFA in theater design with a minor in sculpture from Webster University in St. Louis, and his MFA in printmaking and installation with a certificate in LGBTQ Studies from the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.

Returns and exchanges
A refund on non-custom items will only be issued if there is an obvious discrepancy between the product you received and the photograph or description we provided. In that case, the entire product will need to be returned to us at the buyer's expense before we issue the money back.

Some items are vintage and used. We do our best to describe and/or show every flaw an item might have. We only offer refunds if there was a misrepresentation on the listing and then within 7 days of purchase.

Refunds are less shipping costs. I can not give a refund for shipping. The buyer is responsible for paying the return shipping.

All other refunds are handled on an individual basis. If you have a concern, please, first contact me so we can help resolve it. I aim to please and will work with my customers!

PLEASE NOTE: You have to contact me about it within 7 working days from the day you received an item. If you have any doubts or questions about an item contact me before making an order and I'll be happy to clarify.
Payment
I accept Paypal, credit cards, and Etsy gift cards. Please Note: Orders placed in Michigan are charged a 6% sales tax.
Shipping
PLEASE NOTE: I do not negotiate shipping charges. All charges are based on USPS rates for weight, dimensions, and type (ie. Priority, Parcel Post, etc.) Charges include packing and shipping materials.

Orders are shipped to the address provided on Etsy order receipt.

I typically ship via USPS 2 Day Priority Mail. Rush shipping is available upon request and for an additional fee. I will typically insure any fragile items, and if anything is damaged en route to you we will be sure to remedy the situation!
I post items within 3 days of received payment.

For shipping to Alaska & Hawaii: Contact me before you purchase an item, so I can get you a quote. Shipping is more expensive to your location than within the continental US.

Damage in delivery:

I do my best to pack all orders safely, but no postal service guarantees a 100% no damage delivery (they are known to deliver even metal objects completely flattened). In case of a broken item, please contact me immediately to sort this out in the best possible way. I will require a photo of the damaged item and the box inside and outside before proceeding.

If you haven't received an item by the time it was supposed to arrive, let me know and I will try to track it, if possible.

Delays in transport are beyond my responsibility. Please, try and buy in advance if you need an item by an exact date. Please, let me know of any deadlines before buying to ensure I am able complete your order on time.
