Our story and Water's Edge beginnings
Who would have thought that for both myself and my dad, our great escape would be spending countless hours in a dusty and dirty world of chaos?......our woodshop!
The story begins with Jed Ford, who is my father, teacher and inspiration. Several years ago, he uncovered his love for woodcarving completely by mistake! I simply followed in his footsteps.
At the early age of 3, Jed knew he wanted to be a veterinarian, and my dad's passion has always been taking care of animals. The woodcarving seed was planted by one of his client's, Mr. Morton, who gave him a handcarved wooden buzzard as a thank you for making a house call.
Being such a unique gift my father inquired about the buzzard and asked where it came from. Mr. Morton explained how he made it in his wood shop and how his woodcarving career began many years ago. Mr. Morton extended the invitation for my dad to visit his wood shop so he could try his hand at wood carving sometime. Two years later, my dad recieved a phone call during a busy workday. Upon answering the phone, a voice said "Dr. Ford, you still haven't come to my wood shop, I have been waiting for quite some time." Vaguely recalling the last conversation with Mr. Morton and his hobby, my dad agreed to that on his next day off he would come see what the wood shop was all about. And he did.
That trip to the wood shop was all it took to get my dad 'hooked' and from that point forward the wood shop has become one of his, and now my, favorite go-to places! The true credit and inspiration for our art goes first to Mr. Morton, who has been crafting woodcarvings for 40+ years.
We were encouraged by friends and family to get ourselves out there and open a shop so we decided to give Etsy a try.
We opened our Water's Edge because we wanted to showcase our hidden talent and share with others the joy and passion we find through our work. Starting with nothing more than a rugged piece of wood, we shape our artwork with chipping tools and belt sanders. Most of our supplies consist of natural driftwood and other various types of wood like cedar, oak and mesquite. All of our products are finished with an antique oil that protects the natural wood and gives off a nice glossy finish.
Each item is unique and one of a kind. Although some pieces may have similar styles, no two pieces are the same. We guarantee all of our products for a lifetime. Find out more details on our policies page. Thank you for shopping with us, we promise to provide exceptional customer service and quality products each and every time.
