Welcome to the Weaving Destination social enterprise!! The social enterprise ‘Weaving Destination’ is a welfare and income generation initiative of the charitable organization NEDAN Foundation (NEDAN). NEDAN was established in 2004 in rural un-reached areas of the North East India - Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Kokrajhar, Assam. NEDAN was founded by trained social work professionals (Digambar Narzary from BTC; and Javita Narang) to work with the poorest and voiceless ethnic communities. NEDAN’s vision is to build a society marked by development, equality, peace and human rights, where women and youth are involved in developmental interventions. NEDAN is committed to empowering women, youth, and children on various issues relevant to them and their communities including human rights, women’s empowerment, human trafficking, livelihoods, health, HIV/AIDS and education.
The livelihood programme of NEDAN started in its early years of inception with women in villages of two districts of BTC with home-based looms and a cooperative of women weavers was formed. In 2008, with a grant from UNDP, Weaving Destination was initiated as a center for creating livelihood opportunities and facilitating socio-economic empowerment of women by involving local tribal women including women living with HIV, survivors of human trafficking and female migrant returnees who are highly vulnerable to re-trafficking and impoverishment. Weaving Destination enhances the weaving skills of Bodo women extending this ethnic cultural heritage as a source of sustainable livelihoods. In May 2012, Weaving Destination reached a level of autonomy to be registered as an independent social enterprise.

For details, see NEDAN’s website: www.nedan.in

The impacts of Weaving Destination are at many levels:

Cultural:
• Preserves the local community art of weaving in Bodo women in Assam, India and connects these women to the global DIY/sewing community who are creating a new culture of creativity and consumerism.

Environmental:
• Weaving Destination is the only producer of ethical Eri silk which will be available for purchase to individual consumers. The silk making process preserves the life of the silk worm. Both, cotton and silk, are environmentally-friendly and not dyed with any chemical solutions.

Social & Economic:
• Provides sustainable livelihoods for at-risk women and their families in BTC, Assam, India thus addressing the root causes of trafficking and gender-based violence.
• Connects women and their families with the services, education and training programmes provided by the parent charitable organization - NEDAN Foundation.
• Reinvests 100% of profits back to the Weaving Destination and the community development and welfare work of the NEDAN.
• Provides a unique and desirable product to consumers and home sewists.
• Connects creative women globally.

Thank you so much for supporting the goals of the Weaving Destination!!
