All items offered by Wildflower Textiles are hand-dyed by myself, one at a time.
Most designs are created using the batik method. Wax is painted on the fabric with a brush, or applied with a tjanting (a pen-like tool that has a bowl with a spout for the wax). The areas that are covered with wax resist the dyes, which are applied using several methods for results that range from subtle to more creative textures.
The high-quality, Procion fiber-reactive dyes share electrons with the fabric – they actually become part of the fabric, rather than sitting on top of it like fabric paint or ink would. This means that the fabric stays soft, and the end result is colorfast.
I usually use beeswax for the resist, but also use soy wax, which is made from soy beans, for some projects. The wax is removed by placing the finished product in hot water, which also removes “loose” dye, and preshrinks the clothing.
