A clear boundary is the quietest act of self-love.

For most of my life, I was someone who said yes to everything. As a daughter, I listened. As a mother, I gave. I soaked up other people's emotional weight as if it were my job — and honestly, I believed it was. I thought that was what love looked like. I thought absorbing everyone's pain was just… kindness.

Then my body said enough. When my children were nearly grown, I was hit with three years of debilitating vertigo. It forced me to stop — completely — and face something I had never once questioned: I had no boundaries. Not a single one.

Recovery gave me more than my health back. It gave me a truth I wish someone had told me decades ago — that protecting your peace isn't selfish. It might be the most important thing you ever learn to do.

That truth led me to a word I had known all my life but never truly understood: kekkai. In Japanese Buddhist temples, kekkai is a sacred boundary between the noise outside and the stillness within. No one steps past it uninvited. It's not a wall. It's more like a quiet line that simply says: not here. I finally understood — that was exactly what I had been missing.

I wanted to carry that feeling into everyday life — but when I looked for objects that captured the spirit of kekkai, I couldn't find them. What I found were dusty souvenirs, anime goods, or things too traditionally religious for a modern home. Nothing that could just sit on your desk or hang on your wall and quietly remind you, every morning: your peace matters.

So I decided to make them myself. That's where JISÉ began.
