Finding Harmony Through Handicraft
I learned how to sew in high school, when my drama club/choir teacher invited me to work with her in her growing costuming business. She taught me so much about fabric, patterns, sewing techniques and business in general.
The truth is, though, that I have been sewing since I was seven or eight. My mom still has that ugly dolly made out of socks and yarn. She refuses to give it up, because saw immediately upon receiving it how much love and painstaking effort had been stitched in.
Though my life since high school (and certainly since that lumpy doll) has led me down many different roads-college, a stalled teaching career, motherhood-I have always found time and space to make things. Now that I have my own children who proudly present me with their creations, I really understand how priceless a handmade treasure can be.
Nothing rivals the gift of something unique from someone else's hands to your own. I still have so much love to pour into crafting and creating...and I hope I always do.
I am currently in craft-love with recycled sweaters and fibers. I am continually inspired by others here on Etsy-Katwise and Amber Studios to name a few, whose art has inspired me to delve into this kind of fiber crafting.
I am currently working on balancing my traveling shop at craft shows and my shop here at Etsy, which is an ever-evolving process!
