Ahlouk jewelry are designed by me, Marta Cometti, and made by Tuareg silversmiths in the desert area of Northern Niger, in Africa. By using simple tools and traditional methods, we create jewels of high quality.
We only use clean 925 Solid Sterling Silver and natural gemstones.
We keep the love in the art we make.
Ahlouk is not a made-up word. In the language of the Kel tamasheq, the nomads of the Sahara desert, it has a very precise meaning and that is why it was chosen: it means to create.
We make our jewelry from the beginning: we buy 999 Silver, we create the 925 alloy by adding copper, and then we melt it, shape it, engrave it to create every single piece of jewelry.
I personally select the stones… I love spending days and days surrounded by mountains of stones and looking at them one by one and choosing the ones that seem more special to me. Each piece we create is our art and it's made with love.
We are a team of craftsmen working together in a simple but beautiful workshop. We very much enjoy what we do and the beauty of creating piece by piece; we pride ourselves on offering affordable jewelry without cutting any corners, handcrafted and made with love, respect and dignity.
Each piece of jewelry is packaged in a bag sewn with colorful local fabrics.
n our workshop there is a friendly atmosphere: music, chats and tea accompany the working hours and lunch takes place around one big communal plate, as per tradition. In this way a close relationship is created, which goes beyond the mere working relationship, as it becomes friendship. We are friends, with our own group identity, who are committed to the success of our activity. We apply ourselves for our own survival and that of our families, to keeping the traditional knowledge, to the growth and development of our creativity, and to the pleasure of those who will wear our creations.
Ahlouk jewelry combine two of my wishes: developing work opportunities in Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world, while simultaneously expanding my creativity. The artisans with whom I work with come from families where the trade craft has been passed down for generations.
Our creations are divided into four collections:
- The GIRAMONDO (“globe trotter”) collection is inspired by ethnic artwork or details of it.
- The MITI (“myths”) collection is inspired by mythical characters and events.
- The BRICIOLE (“crumbs”) collection is inspired by proverbs or quotes.
- Jewelry from the collection DISEGNIDISOGNI (“dream designs”) are born from fantasy.
Ahlouk products not only stand out for their originality, but also become a way to expand one's knowledge about another culture, another vision of the world, another way of perceiving things.
Ahlouk is a brand that wants to promote quality handcrafted work while respecting human dignity. Each jewel is unique because it is all handmade and not with the use of molds. So, each of our jewelry pieces is unique! Although the design is the same, the careful observer will see many differences in the details.
Ahlouk jewelry is alive, and contains modernism and traditionalism: Modernism in design and Traditionalism in technique and making.
Our goal is to create original and special designs that stand out!
Each piece comes in a beautiful handmade cloth bag, ready for gift giving.
If the jewelry is part of the MITI collection, it comes with a card describing the myth it is inspired by.
If it is part of the GIRAMONDO collection, it comes with a card that explains the history of the object to which it’s inspired by.
If it is part of the BRICIOLE collection, it is accompanied by a card that tells the proverb or quote from which it is inspired.
