Going with the Flow
As a 6 year old little gal in a farm house in upstate NY, I set up Amy's Creative Corner in an extension of my "play room." I would sell my handmade creations to my family and grandparents, who would give me a quarter for a t-shirt that I painted on. It was archaic, but I knew from when I was young that I wanted to be an artist and run my own business.
In 2008, in Raleigh, NC, I began setting up as a vendor at the local flea markets, art shows, craft fairs and began my small business!
I started off with setting up lots of cute little goodies, including handmade trays, stationery, magnets, scarves, light-switch plates, wall art, etc. I was all over the place. I couldn't control my creations. It was like an addiction. I'd stay up late just working away on little crafts and hoping they'd sell. Obviously, I worked other jobs to be able to survive and live...I guess going to college for graphic design wasn't a bad idea either, since I could create my marketing and advertising materials.
In 2009, I painted a mural for a customer who asked me to include their two dogs in the painting. I had never done this before, so I was quite intimidated. It turned out to be a success! It inspired me to try painting my own dog, Mya. After finishing it, I thought to myself, how have I not done this yet!?!
And there it was. I found my next product. The product that motivates me to work hard everyday in my business. Custom Pet Portraits.
People email me their photos and usually share some sort of story about their pet. This is where it gets emotional! Sometimes people will tell me they are getting a portrait painted because their pet just recently passed and they have been grieving and a painting would be so meaningful. People tell me little things about the pet's personality, like how they have certain looks or behaviors that they want me to try and capture in the painting. Some of these people may sound a little, how do I say this nicely, crazy, but I speak that language. I understand what it is like to have a little furry friend who just rocks! I like to say, although dogs are not your whole life, they make your life whole.
