Frequently asked questions

Do I need to change the filter? How long will my filter work for?

No, you don’t need to change the filter in this mask. This mask is made with a
sewn in filter layer of high grade, high thread count sheeting material that makes
a great filter. The beauty of this type of filter is that you don’t need to change it
and it stays in place. Simply care for your mask and wash and dry according
to the instructions and you will get lots of life out of this mask!

This mask seems narrower or smaller than other masks I have tried, is this normal? Is my mask too small for me?

Yes this is normal! It is not too small. If you have tried other masks, you may notice our mask is narrower, and more centrally located to the front of the face. When I designed this mask we tried a couple different sizes and I had some individuals who have to wear
masks for long periods of time try out the different sizes. Overall, the mask that did
not wrap around the face and that was more central to the nose and mouth seemed
to be the favorite and the most comfortable, breathable, and lightweight. similar to
the N95 or masks that you would buy at the hardware store that are more circular.

The sides of my mask seem to fan out some, is that normal?

Yes! This is normal. The mask is not made to lay totally flat against the face at the far
ends. That would actually not create a good seal. The way the mask seems to create
a C shape at the ends as the elastic is pulled actually creates a better seal and still
protects the nose and mouth sufficiently. This style actually creates a less
claustrophobic and lightweight feel. Remember, you can retie your elastic to wear
over your head if you find you don’t like the feel of wearing the mask over your ears.

I’m worried the elastic will come out when I wash my mask, how can I prevent this from happening?

To prevent your elastic from coming out of the mask, make sure your elatic is tied tightly or that your tie it close up against the mask in a double bow. The best option is to wash on a gentle cycle in a lingerie bag. If you don’t have a lingerie bag, just use a
delicate cycle, and don’t dry with too full a load to prevent tangling. Or air dry.

What do I do if the elastic comes out?

Hopefully, if you wash according to the care instructions, this should not happen. However, if your elastic comes out of your mask, try attaching the elastic to a safety pin and feeding through the tube. Push a small skewer or narrow pencil or stick through the tube to open it up, before trying to feed it through. Or try tying the elastic around the end of one of these sticks to push through. If you still can’t get it through, you can purchase a small tool called a BOBKIN or LOOP TURNER. These tools can be purchased for a few dollars on amazon, or Joann Fabrics. They pull elastic through casings.

As I am washing my mask, I feel like its not as pleated as it was in the beginning. Can I do anything about this?

Yes! This is an easy fix. Simply heat up your iron with steam. Lay your mask flat on the
ironing board. Pull the sides out (pull the left side with your left hand, right side with right hand). As you do this, you will notice the pleat lines forming. Simply press your mask, and ironing these pleats flat again. Try to avoid ironing the elastic, as the inside of the elastic cord is rubber to avoid melting with the heat of the iron.

What size is this mask? Does it have a nose wire?

Each mask is approximately 7 inches wide and 3.5-3.75 inches in height. When the pleats are spread the mask expands to about 7-7.5 inches wide. This mask is meant to be narrower, more centrally located around the mouth and nose for a lightweight, comfortable fit, similar to an N95. This mask does NOT have a nose wire. We decided to not include a wire to allow for longer use of the mask. The wire can sometimes rust over several washes, or even poke out of the mask at some point. For glasses wearers: With proper placement of the mask under your glasses fogging can be prevented. We include some tips on this in your mask order.
