Welcome to Buttonit Designs, our family business run by Josh & Carly Watson, and Candy Schumacher (my mom).
I started making jewelry as a hobby, creating pieces that incorporated vintage treasures. Often times, these vintage treasures were buttons, so that is what led to our shop name ButtonIt.
I was a Chemistry teacher, so I did this in my spare time, as I am not one who can sit still. This vintage line of product did not sell too well. A few months later, I was planning our daughter’s first birthday party. She was our 3rd child, but the first girl out of 7 grandchildren, so we were going all out with a princess theme party. We created personalized, bottle cap necklaces as party favors.
We decided to open up an Etsy shop in 2008, and try selling personalized items online. The sales started to trickle in, and then our business continued to grow. My mom ran the business during the day while I was teaching, and then I would come home to numerous hours of work. It was beginning to grow at a rate I could not keep up with as a side job, so Josh quit his day job (real estate appraiser) in 2012 to work for the family business.
After the birth of our 4th child in 2014, I cut back to teaching part time, so that I could be home more with our 4 kids.
In 2016, we decided to move from Ca to Wa for a change in lifestyle. This allowed me to step out of teaching, work full time for our business, and allowed us to streamline our production. Up to this point, we had worked out of 2 separate home offices, but we moved our business to an outbuilding on our property, allowing for greater efficiency.
Over the years, we have expanded our product line immensely- including in house, custom laser engraved items. This had been a dream of ours for many years.
Raising a family and running your own business is a lot of hard work, but we would not have it any other way. We love what we do, and appreciate the flexibility that comes with our schedules, allowing us to work around our kids’ activities. We spend our free time enjoying the beautiful PNW, and all it has to offer.
