About

A Celebration of Michigan through Photos

Michigan has a wealth of resources, that can be a wonderland for a landscape photographer. I am fascinated with Michigan's ecological diversity and celebrate its beauty through photography. From the shoreline of Lake Superior and the rugged U.P. wilderness where I grew up to the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline and agricultural countryside where I now reside I explore all of Michigan, never tiring of what this Great Lakes State has to offer. I seek to capture high quality, compelling images of the Michigan environment, hoping to bring an awareness of its importance...and make a living at the same time...

From the start I have sought to make the highest quality work and make it affordable to everyone. It is my goal to provide the best value in Michigan landscape photography.

Exploring the landscape has had a profound influence on my life and I hope everyone gets a chance to experience it.

Thank you for taking the time to look around my shop and learn a little more about me. I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I received my Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 2004 from Michigan State University; also where I met my lovely wife Gwyneth (Birkett) Kainulainen. I have worked in a variety of mediums, ranging from Painting to Book Art to Photography. After receiving my degree from MSU I worked as a Computer Artist for Dart Container Corporation in Mason, MI for about a year. Then, my wife and I moved to a 50 acre farm in Scottivlle, MI. I worked as a Graphic Artist at Oceana's Herald-Journal for 2 years before finally going in to business for myself. In March of 2008, I formed my own freelance Graphic Services and Photography business, BWANA design and photography. While the graphic services part of my business never really got off of the ground, my work as a photographer continues to grow and thrive. In 2013 I dropped my DBA and decided to practice under my own name. I now work as a landscape photographer full-time (and more often than not even more than full time) although I still dabble occasionally in vinyl graphics. My goal is to offer highly professional, inspired work at prices that are friendly to a variety of budgets. I GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR CHOICE TO DO BUSINESS WITH ME!

The term BWANA speaks to the otherworldly quality of the abstract work I focused on when I started my business. It is a Swahili word that functions as a term of respect for a male, much like mister or sir in English. I was originally introduced to the term when listening to Lindsey Buckingham's (former lead guitarist for Fleetwood Mac) first solo album, Law and Order. It is the name of the first track, which is one of my favorite songs from the album. I also like how the word looks, the visual combination of the letters and the sound of the word, particularly how foreign (especially for Michigan) it sounds. The word is meant to raise questions within the viewer and to strike a particular mood with my abstract work; a feeling of familiarity while at the same time being completely unkown. The abstract works are pictures of actual objects I come across on my daily travels. By focusing on small details of color and texture I hope to free them from their defined reality and let them exist more in the viewer's imagination. I leave it to the viewer to create a new, more personal meaning. My images are meant to be catalysts for imagination. I like to explore color, texture, shape, and form; creating less definable and more sensational images. Although I do not create as much abstract work as before I still find the term fascinating.
