Sometimes it is necessary to reinvent oneself and open new ways. One is "El códice del Eremita", undoubtedly.
My blog “El códice del Eremita" (The Hermit's codex) was born to let the public know about the work a restorer of graphic documents develops, an almost unknown and even undervalued activity (few people know it is basically a science-based profession), using a language as simple as possible.
Along with this objective, I was determined to achieve another: to meet my creative self again, which I had neglected for a long time. I've always loved drawing, writing... having my hands and mind busy following the beat of my imagination. I missed it so much.
I found the final push in binding, respecting and breaking its rules in a conscious way, taking advantage of errors to create unique pieces, researching and coming back to what I didn't learn in the past...
That's how, gladly shut in my small studio, I became a "hermit", and adopted that name permanently. A hermit similar to many of you, artists who manage to spare some time to find yourselves. And then, a large vital "Codex", to restore and to fill.
I find inspiration primarily on traditional binding, but I also try to formally reinvent the technique and make the product affordable without reducing its quality. I also look for the final result to be simple, harmonious, so that each part "talks" without outshining the others, from the humble seam to the embossed decoration. I like to think that each one of the models have some balance.
I do not repeat an item immediately once it's sold, I try to leave the next one "born" from the previous one: the materials and techniques make each piece unique, and thus I feel (a little secret: before sending them to a customer I "talk" to my creations, wishing them the best in their "new life" ... are these crazy hermit's things?)
