About

I design with spontaneity.

I got started working with wood shortly after I bought my first and current home here in Arden, NC. Having recently graduated from college at the time, I had very little furniture - I'm talking a bed and like two chairs. The house echoed with every single move! I thought I would furnish the house with thrift store finds; I knew that I wanted to be conscientious about my purchases and not just buy mass produced and unsustainable products. With limited thrift store success, I ventured into new construction, but quickly realized that most things were either good quality and expensive or poor quality and cheap. Then one day, I decided that I would try my hand at making some furniture. I needed two side tables, so I snagged some 1" thick oak slabs at a reclaimed wood store and some other supplies from Lowes. I picked up a circular saw from Walmart and a couple other tools and got to work in my garage. The tables were quite austere to say the least, but I suddenly felt inspired as I realized that I could make what I needed with my own hands!

The progression into fine woodworking was gradual. I iterated on my designs, got frustrated often when things didn't turn out as planned, but bit by bit got better with my design sense. My first piece that sold was a walnut and maple coffee table at a local Asheville store. I was elated! It was then that I realized that I could design and craft things that I enjoyed and that others appreciated.

I design and craft out of my garage - turned - studio. I am very spontaneous in my design strategy. I never draw out an idea fully if at all, but rather design as I go. I like to feel the wood and see what is inside it as I cut. That inspires the design. Usually a design will take an unexpected turn because I will cut where I did not intend or do something else unintended. But it is delightfully surprising when the design comes out far better than I had originally planned.

The name Crafted Glory comes from my views on good design. I believe the benefits of good design extend into so many far-reaching areas of society. We were all created in the image of a master Designer who went at incredible lengths to put intricate detail into the created world, making immeasurable galaxies, towering mountains, breathtaking landscapes, and millions of interesting living creatures. And all of it is a testament to the infinite magnitude of His glory. I feel that it is an honor and obligation to design beautiful things to the best of my ability to point to a creative God who placed creativity in me.
