Pottery 101
I started collecting pottery in the late 1980s. I was working at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and traveled to Minnesota four times a year for work. I began stopping in local thrift and antique stores in my spare time. I was amazed at how inexpensive the regional pottery was selling for at these places. Soon, I was taking an extra suitcase along to bring more back. Red Wing was the first manufacturer I fell in love with because it was made locally. That quickly led to McCoy, and then on to various American pottery makers. One year, we took a vacation and flew to Minneapolis to attend the flea market in Owatonna. We drove back, stopping at little towns along the way. By the time we were back in California, the rental car was nearly scraping the ground. In all, we collected over a thousand pieces during the next 20 years. It's now time to declutter the garage, which we've never been able to park a car in. I hope my passion for collecting pottery can bring some joy into your life as well!
